팀 원버그가 "온 감각과 마음(his whole being)을 다해 국가폭력을 증언했"던 전남대병원 옥상. 1980년 5월 그 현장에 함께 있었던 동료가 46년 만에 같은 자리에 다시 섰다. 항쟁 5일차인 1980년 5월 24일, 독일인 기자 위르겐 힌츠페터는 "광주의 전경을 담고 싶다"고 했고 팀(Tim Warnberg, 만 25세에 5·18민주화운동 경험 후 1993년 작고) 평화봉사단 동료들은 그를 전남대병원 옥상으로 안내했다. 그곳에 폴 코트라이트(Paul Courtright, 71)도 있었다. 힌츠페터의 인터뷰 제안에 팀은 "광주 사람들에게 조금이라도 도움이 되고 싶다"며 기꺼이 응했다. 그때의 인터뷰 영상이 46년 만에 세상에 공개됐다. 5·18 46주기인 지난 18일, 폴은 1980년 5월 이후 처음으로 다시 전남대병원 옥상에 섰다. 그 영상의 배경인 금남로는 참 많이 달라져 있었지만 한편으론 또 그대로였다. 폴은 우뚝 솟아 시야를 가린 고층 건물 사이로 여전히 남은 옛 전남도청과 전일빌딩 인근을 한참 응시했다. 어렵게 입을 뗀 그는 "여러 감정이 밀려온다"며 "팀도 이 모습을 함께 봤으면 좋았을 텐데"라고 말끝을 흐렸다. 이어 취재진을 향해 "여러분과 만났어야 할 사람은 제가 아니라 팀이었어야 했다"며 이렇게 말했다. "왜냐하면 5·18 당시 어떤 일이 벌어졌는지를 이해하는 데 있어, 팀이 정말 결정적인(critical) 사람이었으니까요. 당시 팀이 인터뷰로 묘사한 것들, 제가 본 것들 모두 결코 잊지 못할 것들이었습니다. 5·18은 그의 삶의 일부가 됐고, 제 삶의 일부가 됐습니다." 폴은 46주기 기념식 참석을 위해 지난 4월 10일 한국에 입국했고, 지난 5월 17~19일 광주에서 시간을 보냈다. 는 사흘 간 그와 동행하며 여러 이야기를 나눴다. 폴은 한글이 적힌 넥타이를 맨 채 처음 기념식에 참석했고 항쟁의 복판이었던 금남로와 복원 후 처음 개관한 옛 전남도청, 그리고 희생자가 잠들어 있는 구·신묘역을 차례로 찾았다. 폴은 지난 2020년 출간된 회고록 의 저자이기도 하다. 1979년 미국 평화봉사단 자격으로 전남 나주의 호혜원(한센인 정착촌)에 파견돼 약 2년 간 근무한 그는 이후 평생을 안과 의사로 살았다. 폴의 광주 방문은 회고록 출판 전인 2019년 현장 답사를 위해 찾은 이후 이번이 두 번째다. 광주 곳곳 팀과의 추억 폴이 추억하는 '팀과 함께한 장소'는 전남대병원만이 아니었다. 팀은 항쟁 초반 광주역 인근 자신의 하숙집에 머무르며 다른 평화봉사단원들과 "방패" 역할을 하겠다고 다짐했다. 또 "평범한 광주시민"을 "폭도"로, "시민들의 항쟁"을 "북한이 배후"라고 왜곡하는 TV 뉴스에 분노해 불탄 광주MBC 건물(당시 전남여고 맞은편)도 찾아갔다. 계엄군이 잠시 물러간 뒤 시민들의 행진과 집회가 이어졌던 금남로와 분수대도 팀은 꾸준히 찾았다. 아직 노랗게 물들지 않은 은행나무와 도청 계단 또한 외신기자와 시민수습대책위의 통역을 위해 그가 지나쳤던 곳이다. 이 모든 곳에 폴도 함께 자리했다. "5월 19일에 저는 팀의 하숙집으로 갔습니다. 그때 팀은 저와 주디(또다른 평화봉사단원)에게, 그 집에 있던 젊은 학생들을 보호하기 위해 머물러 줄 수 있겠냐고 요청했습니다. 우리가 그들과 계엄군들 사이에 "방패(barrier)" 역할을 하자는 것이었습니다. 만약 군인이 집에 오게 되면, 저와 주디는 젊은 학생들 대신 앞에 나서기로 했습니다. 팀은 다른 집으로 가야 했습니다. 그곳에는 또 다른 젊은 학생들이 머물고 있었고, 군인이 그 집에 들어오려고 할 경우 자신이 그들을 보호하겠다는 생각이었습니다." 전체 내용보기
