멕시코 오악사카의 중심부, 소칼로(Zócalo)와 카페·갤러리·서점·공예품 상점이 줄지어 있는 보행자 전용 중심거리인 안다도르 투리스티코(Andador Turístico) 어디에서도 스타벅스 매장이나 스타벅스 로고가 들어간 컵을 든 사람을 만나기는 어렵다. 오악사카는 인구 약 30만 명 규모이지만, 오악사카 주의 주도이자 멕시코 남부의 문화 중심지로서 문화적·역사적 영향력은 대도시급이다. 그러나 오악사카의 도심에는 스타벅스 매장이 없다. 이곳 사람들이 그들의 입점을 거절했기 때문이다. 거절의 이유, 공동체 오악사카 도심에는 스타벅스나 맥도날드 같은 글로벌 체인점들이 들어오지 못했다. 맥도날드는 2002년, 스타벅스는 2010년대 초 개장 시도에 시민들이 맞섰고, 그들은 결국 도심 외곽 지역에 자리 잡을 수밖에 없었다. 스타벅스의 경우 시내 중심부로부터 떨어진 도심권 북쪽의 상업·주거 지역, 레포르마(Reforma)에 한 곳 매장을 내고 있다. 오악사카 중심부는 여전히 글로벌 패스트푸드 체인점 진입을 막아낸 상징적 공간으로 남아있다. 이 저항의 출발점으로 프란시스코 톨레도(Francisco Toledo)를 꼽는데 이견이 없다. 그는 판화·회화·조각에서 토착적 상징과 현대적 기법을 결합해 세계적 명성을 얻은 오악사카를 대표하는 예술가이자 사회 운동가이다. 미디어 모니터링 회사 '시플라 뉴스 에이전시(SIPLA Agencia de prensa)'의 라파엘 디아스 페루초(Rafael Díaz Perucho) 대표는 그때의 이야기를 들려 주었다. "그는 2002년 맥도날드가 도심에 매장을 내려고 했을 때 맥도날드의 존재가 오악사카 사람들의 문화적 정체성에 위협이 된다고 보았습니다. 이런 사유를 담은 서한을 미국 본사 경영진에게 보냈습니다. 또한 오악사카 공동체의 정체성을 가장 잘 드러내는 전통 음식과 음료인 타말레 (Tamales)와 테하테(Tejate)를 글로벌 체인에 맞서는 문화적 무기로 삼았습니다. 서한에는 무형 문화유산의 일부로서 오악사카의 전통 요리를 준비하고 즐기는 데 할애하는 느린 시간의 가치를 강조하는 내용도 담았습니다. 광장에서는 지나가는 모든 사람에게 원주민 여성들이 준비한 타말레와 테하테를 무료로 시식할 수 있게 했습니다." 타말레는 옥수수 반죽을 직접 갈아서 준비하고, 속 재료(고기·치즈·채소 등)를 넣은 뒤 옥수수 껍질이나 바나나 잎에 싸서 찜솥에서 장시간 증기로 찌는 과정이 필요하다. 이 과정은 수 시간이 걸린다. 그 시간이 곧 공동체의 가치였다. 공장에서 사전 가공된 패티와 빵, 소스가 매장에 공급되고 수 분 내 조리가 가능하도록 한 패스트푸드의 핵심 가치와 무엇이 다른 지를 보여준 것이다. 광장에서는 이처럼 무료 시식 행사 등 여러 저항 이벤트가 이어졌다. 시간과 정성이라는 공동체의 가치를 보여준 이 이벤트를 통해 1만 명이 넘는 시민들의 서명을 모을 수 있었다. 이러한 사회적 압력 덕분에 당시의 오악사카 시장, 가비노 쿠에(Gabino Cué 이후 오악사카 주지사가 됨)는 1년 후 오악사카의 중심지인 역사지구(Centro Histórico)에 맥도날드 매장의 허가 요청이 승인되지 않았다고 발표했다. 빠른 서비스와 대량 소비를 강조하는 글로벌 체인점들은 세계 곳곳에서 다양하고 느린 로컬의 문화와 충돌하면서 정체성을 위협한다. 더불어 지역 상권을 압도한다. 하지만 오악사카는 여전히 모든 글로벌 체인점들로부터 자유롭다. 전체 내용보기
