Mexican YouTuber faces backlash over Rising Sun flag in World Cup video

A Mexican YouTuber has come under fire for using footage of the Rising Sun flag in a video introducing the 48 countries competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Seo Kyung-duk, a professor of liberal arts at Sungshin Women's University, on Tuesday criticized the YouTuber who runs a soccer-focused channel for using the flag that represented the Japanese Imperial Army. “The report came from a Korean resident in Mexico. Hojo Taehwan Banknote

King Gojong of Joseon established the Central Government Mint (Jeonhwanguk) of Incheon in 1892, and the Office of Currency Conversion (Taehwanseo), the agency responsible for exchanging banknotes. The office issued convertible banknotes in denominations of 50, 20, 10 and 5 nyang for the purpose of withdrawing from circulation the old coins known as Sangpyeong Tongbo. The front face of the note bears the inscription, “This bill has been issued to be exchanged with currency in circulation,” together with a warning, “Anyone who forges or falsifies this bill or who circulates it knowing that it is forged or falsified will be subject to severe punishment.” Banknotes such as this were incinerated before being circulated after the Central Government Mint of Incheon was taken over by Imperial Japan and the Office of Currency Conversion was disbanded

Manen Oban

The Japanese term “Oban” refers to the coins minted by the Shogunate for a special purpose, such as a reward for vassals or as tribute to the Japanese imperial court. Of these coins, those named Manen Oban were issued in the nineteenth century and circulated as currency. This particular coin bears on its front face its denomination of “ten nyang (十兩)” written in ink, together with the name of the family, Goto, that minted it, and paulownia symbols at its four corners. The rear face is inscribed with the names of their maker and place of production, as well as paulownia symbols. The Manen Oban coin exhibited here was issued between 1861 and 1862 and contains over 100 grams of gold.
