US detains 30 Indians, begins deportation

New York: About 30 individuals from India, found to be living in the US illegally and working as commercial truck drivers, have been arrested as part of a federal operation and will soon be deported.The US Customs and Border Protection said in a statement Monday that during the week of May 11-15, Border Patrol agents from Yuma Sector in Arizona arrested 52 individuals during 'Operation Checkmate' for being in the US illegally, including 36 who were found to be driving semi-trucks.Out of the 36 illegal semi-truck drivers arrested, 30 were from India, while the remaining six were from Mexico, El Salvador, and Russia. They had commercial driver's licenses from states such as California, New York, Washington and Virginia, while some did not possess any form of driver's license. Most possessed employment authorisation documents, which were obtained during the Joe Biden administration and were no longer valid. Federal agents are on patrol every day to "ensure we stop these individuals and prevent more deadly crashes from occurring on the road across the United States."Under the administration of President Donald Trump, the Department of Transportation issued an order to stop unqualified foreign drivers from obtaining licenses to drive commercial trucks and buses.Over the past several months, there have been instances of Indian-origin truck drivers arrested and charged with causing fatal crashes while driving commercial vehicles in the US.

Wockhardt shares rocket 19% after FDA approval for antibiotic targeting drug-resistant infections. Check details

Shares of Wockhardt soared as much as 19% to their day's high of Rs 2,420 on the BSE on Monday after the company announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved ZAYNICH (cefepime and zidebactam), a novel intravenous antibiotic for the treatment of adults with complicated urinary tract infections (UTI), including pyelonephritis, caused by susceptible Gram-negative pathogens.According to the company, ZAYNICH combines the fourth-generation cephalosporin cefepime with zidebactam and is designed to target multiple penicillin-binding proteins simultaneously. The antibiotic had earlier received Qualified Infectious Disease Product (QIDP) and Fast Track designations from the FDA.The approval comes at a time when antimicrobial resistance remains a major healthcare challenge. Wockhardt cited data indicating that more than 2.8 million antimicrobial-resistant infections occur annually in the United States, resulting in over 35,000 deaths each year. The company also noted that complicated urinary tract infections account for more than 6,00,000 hospitalisations annually in the U.S., with a growing proportion linked to antimicrobial-resistant and multidrug-resistant bacteria.The FDA's decision was based in part on results from the Phase 3 ENHANCE-1 study, a randomised, double-blind, multicentre trial that evaluated the efficacy, safety and tolerability of ZAYNICH against meropenem in hospitalised adults with complicated urinary tract infections or acute pyelonephritis.In the study, ZAYNICH achieved a composite clinical cure and microbiological response rate of 89% at the test-of-cure visit, compared with 68.4% for meropenem. The treatment difference was 20.6% with a 95% confidence interval of 12.3 to 29.5. The company said the drug was generally well tolerated during the trial.The ENHANCE-1 study enrolled 530 patients across 64 sites spanning the United States, Europe, Latin America, China and India.Wockhardt stated that ZAYNICH targets penicillin-binding proteins PBP 1a/b, 2 and 3 simultaneously, a mechanism that it says provides bactericidal activity against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria for which treatment options remain limited.The company also disclosed that ZAYNICH received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) on May 27, 2026. Gen Chauhan exits as CDS

New Delhi: Outgoing Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan on Saturday described his tenure as "very satisfying" as he wrapped up a three-year-and-eight-month stint at the top military post, during which he focused on bringing synergy among the three services.Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani (retd) will take charge as India's next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on Sunday."I had a very satisfying and excellent tenure," the outgoing CDS told reporters after he was accorded a ceremonial tri-services guard of honour.Gen Chauhan, a former Eastern Army Commander, took charge as the country's senior-most military commander in September 2022, over nine months after the first CDS General Bipin Rawat died in a helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu.As Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Chauhan played a key role in planning and implementation of Operation Sindoor along with the three service chiefs.During his tenure, he focused on ensuring tri-services synergy to enhance India's military prowess in view of the evolving regional security scenario.The Chief of Defence Staff also initiated a number of measures towards India's plan to roll out the theaterisation model by creating integrated military commands."It's a matter of great honour for me to superannuate with a tri-services guard of honour. I thank the three services and Headquarters IDS (Integrated Defence Staff) for it. With the conclusion of the guard of honour, I bid farewell to my colleagues in uniform, comrades in arms," Gen Chauhan said."I just laid the wreath at the War Memorial for the last time in uniform, as a humble tribute to those who laid down their lives in the line of duty. After the wreath laying, I was welcomed by friends, relatives and well-wishers. This is symbolic of my transition from uniform to civilian life," he said.Gen Chauhan's tenure was to end on September 30 last year, but he was given an extension.He had retired from service in May 2021 in the rank of lieutenant general, but assumed the rank of a four-star General after taking charge as India's second Chief of Defence Staff.Gen Chauhan was the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) when Indian fighter jets pounded a Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist training camp deep inside Pakistan's Balakot in February 2019. He was known to have provided key inputs for the operation.Born on May 18, 1961, Gen Chauhan was commissioned into the 11 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army in 1981.In his distinguished career, Gen Chauhan held several command, staff and instrumental appointments and had extensive experience in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir and Northeast India.The officer is an alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun.In the rank of Maj General, the officer had commanded an Infantry Division in the critical Baramulla sector in the Northern Command.Later, he commanded a corps in the Northeast and subsequently went on to become the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command.Gen Chauhan was awarded with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal for his exemplary services to the Indian Army.

Gold demand drops 70% after sharp duty hike in India

Kolkata: Gold demand in India slipped about 70% since the government more than doubled import duty from earlier this month, adding to already tepid consumer sentiment amid higher fuel and food prices due to the Iran war.Demand fell to about 7.5 tonnes in the fortnight ended May 27 from around 25 tonnes a year earlier, according to industry estimates. The government increased the import duty on gold to 15% from 6% with effect from May 13."Reports trickling in from jewellers across India shows that there has been a 70% drop in demand after the import duty was hiked," said Surendra Mehta, national secretary of India Bullion & Jewellers Association (IBJA). "The unorganised trade, which comprises 65% of the gold trade, has been worst hit due to the duty hike."Also Read: India's gold import problem may already have a solution at homeJoy Alukkas, chairman of gold jewellery retail chain Joyalukkas, attributed the demand weakness to several factors. "It is not only the high import duty that has dented the demand," he said. "The Prime Minister's appeal to stay away from gold for a year has also impacted consumer sentiment in a big way. At Joyalukkas, we are seeing demand dropping by more than 35%. We are not sure whether it will slip further." 131398034Mehta at IBJA said apart from the gold import duty hike, higher petrol and diesel prices and food items are also weighing on consumer sentiment "as they are not willing to spend on gold now".The effective tax burden on gold, including goods and services tax (GST), has risen to 18.45% from 9.18% after the duty increase. The government raised duties against the backdrop of a weak rupee, elevated crude prices, and geopolitical tensions, while also tightening import rules and capping duty-free imports under the Advance Authorisation Scheme."At present, gold is not in the priority list of consumers," said Mehta. "Moreover, it is now the period of Adhik Maas, when Hindus generally avoid buying anything precious. On Friday, gold of 999 purity traded at about ₹1.57 lakh per 10 grams, excluding GST, in Mumbai's spot market.Volumes are weak in south India, traditionally one of the country's biggest gold-consuming markets. Some consumers are also shifting towards lighter and lower-carat jewellery while sales of old gold have risen sharply, according to jewellers. "Consumers are not stretching their budgets," said B Govindan, chairman of Bhima Jewellery. "They are buying whatever fits their budget and therefore choosing lightweight and lower-carat jewellery. On the contrary, there is a huge rush among consumers to sell old gold and take cash back home."Industry executives noted the varied impact of the import duty increase across segments, with many retailers indicating a pause in procurement. "Large chain stores saw a brief period of panic buying after the announcement, driven by expectations of further measures, and while they expect a slowdown in sales, they remain relatively resilient given inventory buffers and continued support from bridal demand," said Kavita Chacko, research head at the World Gold Council (WGC).Mid-sized and regional jewellers are continuing to see demand from affluent customers but are expected to rely more on gold exchange programmes and tighter inventory cycles going forward, she said. "Smaller retailers appear the most vulnerable: already stretched by persistently high prices, they now face added pressure from sales volumes and profit margins," said Chacko.
