New Delhi: Private sector investment is showing signs of revival, with companies increasingly borrowing for expansion and infrastructure projects, Punjab National Bank (PNB) Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Ashok Chandra said, stressing that the private sector has started "reposing faith" in the economy.In an exclusive interview with ANI, Chandra said the PNB has witnessed a sharp rise in corporate loan sanctions over the past year, indicating growing investment activity across multiple sectors."It has started happening. In fact, from the second half of last financial year, October onwards, we have started seeing good reaction happening in the system," Chandra said while responding to a question on whether private capital expenditure is picking up.Also read: India banks could raise $35-$40 billion via RBI's foreign currency deposit scheme, PNB CEO Ashok Chandra saysAccording to him, PNB sanctioned nearly Rs 4 lakh crore worth of corporate loans during FY26, almost double the level seen in the previous financial year."I will tell you the figure which was in 24-25, the total corporate loan book sanction was 2,1,000,000 crore. And it almost doubled in 25-26," he said.The PNB chief said the momentum has continued into the current financial year, and the PNB expects corporate loan sanctions to exceed Rs 4 lakh crore."And the pace at which in these two months of this financial year, the things have started growing, I am very confident that it will be more than 4,00,000,000 crore of corporate loan book," he said.Chandra said the increase in corporate borrowing suggests that private companies are once again stepping up investments after a period when much of the capital expenditure was led by the government.Also read: Indian banks better placed than APAC peers: Fitch on West Asia woes"So if that is the speed at which it is happening, I think definitely the private sector has also started reposing faith in the system. And I think private capex has started happening," he said.He also pointed to broader economic indicators, including GDP growth and industrial activity, as evidence of increasing investment and business confidence."If you see the growth data, the GDP data which has been declared, the industrial output almost all time high now, manufacturing sector in the industry is also a very good growth now. So all those things definitely indicate that the country is growing and a lot of activities are happening in the country now," Chandra said.The PNB chief noted that investment demand is emerging across a wide range of sectors.Renewable energy has been identified as one of the PNB's key focus areas, with substantial lending being directed towards the sector. Besides renewable energy, the bank has increased exposure to iron and steel, textiles, cement and other manufacturing industries.Infrastructure-related sectors are also witnessing strong activity, according to Chandra."The road, a lot of projects are coming, the port, airport, infra together as a whole. So, machineries, trading also. So, almost all sectors we have taken good exposure, and we are seeing the vibration happening in the economy in almost all the sectors," he said.Apart from corporate lending, Chandra said growth in other segments remains robust. MSME lending, which expanded by 20 per cent last year, is now growing at more than 20 per cent. Retail loans are growing at 18-19 per cent, while agriculture credit is expanding at 15-16 per cent.He added that despite global geopolitical uncertainties, the Punjab National Bank (PNB) has not witnessed any adverse impact on its loan book so far and continues to see healthy demand across business segments.

C. Bhargava recently signalled the company's intent to rebalance its portfolio."We are planning to develop both small cars and SUVs. The small car market is growing. India is a country where small cars have a long-term future," Bhargava said.The comments mark a notable shift in tone from an industry that spent years focusing on larger and more expensive vehicles.For Maruti, which built its dominance on models such as the Alto, WagonR and Swift, the renewed emphasis reflects confidence that affordability will remain central to India's mobility story."A large part of the populationโฆ need small cars" for basic mobility, Bhargava said.Industry analysts say the opportunity remains substantial."In the small cars segment, there is a much bigger conversion pool that carmakers can navigate. Hence, there is this renewed push towards small cars and that segment," said Hemal Thakkar, Senior Director, Crisil Intelligence."India is a price sensitive market and hence, small cars will stay and customers are looking for upgrades within vehicles. If carmakers can provide small cars with new features and upgrades, then there will be more customers for the small car space," he added.Making hatchbacks aspirational againIf Maruti is signalling a strategic return to small cars, Tata Motors is attempting something more ambitious โ making hatchbacks desirable again.The company this week unveiled the next-generation Tiago and Tiago.ev, positioning them as technology-rich products aimed at reviving a segment many in the industry had effectively written off."Hatchbacks remain the gateway to personal mobility for millions of Indian families and yet, for far too long, this segment received scarce attention from the industry, when it genuinely deserved far more," said Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director and CEO, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles.Calling the new Tiago "not an evolution but a full reinvention", Chandra said the vehicle brings substantially upgraded design, connected technologies and safety features that were once largely reserved for more expensive categories.The next-generation Tiago gets a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless smartphone connectivity, a dual-screen dashboard, wireless charging and a segment-first 360-degree surround-view camera."The feeling of wow shouldn't be reserved for expensive cars," Chandra said."Today hatchback customers want far more than mobility, they want design, tech, safety and pride of ownership. A car they want to flaunt."The company has also positioned the Tiago.ev as an affordable electric mobility option, offering a lifetime battery warranty and fast-charging capability that can add up to 100 kilometres of range in 18 minutes."Tiago will make EV more accessible," Chandra said.Why affordability is back in focusThe renewed interest in hatchbacks comes as affordability re-emerges as a key concern across the industry.Vehicle prices have risen sharply in recent years because of stricter regulations, higher commodity costs and the addition of new safety and technology features.That has increasingly pushed first-time buyers out of the market.According to Srikumar Krishnamurthy, Senior Vice President and Co-Group Head, Corporate Ratings, ICRA Limited, hatchbacks continue to play a critical role in expanding the customer base."Hatchbacks remain a preferred segment, particularly for first-time buyers and households seeking a second vehicle, as affordability and comfort are key purchase considerations," he said."From an original equipment perspective, a presence across segments also helps improve reach, especially in Tier 2/3 cities."Krishnamurthy added that rising vehicle costs are forcing manufacturers to revisit their entry-level offerings."With input costs rising and vehicle prices expected to increase further, affordability is becoming even more important, especially in the mass-market segment. In response, OEs are looking to reposition entry-level hatchbacks and compact SUVs through new launches and refreshed variants that offer a stronger value proposition to consumers."Beyond SUVsThe industry's renewed focus on hatchbacks does not mean SUVs are going away.Far from it.Utility vehicles remain India's dominant passenger vehicle category and continue to drive growth and profitability for manufacturers.What is changing, however, is the recognition that growth cannot come solely from moving customers up the value chain.To sustain volumes, carmakers need to bring new buyers into the market.That is especially important as India adds millions of young consumers entering the workforce, many of whom are seeking their first personal vehicle but remain highly sensitive to price.Affordable electric hatchbacks could further strengthen the segment's appeal in coming years."Affordable EV hatchbacks could become an attractive proposition as charging infrastructure improves, range-anxiety concerns ease, and the financing environment becomes more supportive," Krishnamurthy said.For much of the past decade, India's hatchbacks were treated as yesterday's story while SUVs became the industry's obsession.Now, as automakers search for their next growth engine, the segment that once put millions of Indians behind the wheel is beginning to look relevant again.The future of India's auto market may still be taller, bolder and SUV-shaped. But increasingly, carmakers are recognising that the road to scale may once again begin with a hatchback.
Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) emerged as heavy sellers in Indian equities on Friday, pulling out a net Rs 20,637 crore in a single session, recording one of the sharpest single-day selloffs in recent years, as markets grappled with the impact of the latest MSCI index rebalancing.Before this, the sharpest fall occurred last month (April 2, 2026), when FIIs pulled out Rs 19,837 crore in a single day, data from ACE Equity showed.The selloff came as benchmark indices fell 1.5%, with market participants attributing much of the late-session weakness to passive fund flows linked to the index reshuffle. The scale of foreign investor activity stood out not just because of the outflow figure, but also because of the sheer volume traded during the session.FPIs accounted for Rs 198,465 crore of trading activity out of the NSE's total turnover of Rs 287,452 crore, representing nearly 69% of the day's traded value, provisional data on the NSE showed.Despite ending the day as net sellers of Rs 20,637 crore, FPIs traded nearly 9.6 times that amount during the session. In comparison, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net buyers of Rs 16,260 crore and recorded total trades worth Rs 53,772 crore, or around 3.3 times their net purchase value.The high participation prompted questions over whether the activity was solely driven by MSCI-related portfolio adjustments or whether high-frequency trading (HFT) strategies amplified volumes around the index rebalance. The size of the turnover also sparked debate over how much of the reported foreign outflow reflected actual portfolio repositioning and how much may have been linked to short-term trading activity.Nilesh Shah, MD of Kotak Mahindra Asset Management, questioned whether the surge in activity was surprising given that Indian equities are currently not a key focus area for FPIs. He also asked whether Friday's volumes were driven purely by MSCI rebalancing or whether high-frequency trading (HFT) activity around the index reshuffle had amplified turnover. Shah further wondered how much of the reported net FPI outflow of Rs 20,637 crore could be attributed to HFT trades.Market expert Gurmeet Chadha also questioned the sharp rise in trading volumes, arguing that โspeed and money muscleโ were being used to distort market moves. He further highlighted the addition of 31,000 short contracts even as Brent crude hovered around $90 a barrel and hopes of a weekend deal persisted. Calling the activity suspicious, he said โwe need to act and trap this cartelโ.According to Abhilash Pagaria, Head of Alternative and Quantitative Research at NuvamaWealth, the rebalancing led to outflows of around Rs 8,000-8,500 crore. He said the figure was somewhat higher than in previous reviews due to free-float adjustments in stocks such as Bajaj Finance, HUL and TCS, among others, describing the impact as a one-time adjustment arising from a new methodology.MSCI RejigMSCI's latest review saw Federal Bank, MCX, NALCO and Indian Bank added to the MSCI Standard Index, while Hyundai Motor India, Jubilant FoodWorks, Kalyan Jewellers and RVNL were removed. The changes took effect at the close of trade on May 29.The review also resulted in weight increases for Adani Power, BPCL, Nykaa, Trent and OFFS. Despite the reshuffle, India's overall weight in the MSCI Standard Index remained broadly stable at around 12.3%, compared with 12.4% earlier. The total number of Indian constituents in the index also remained unchanged at 165.Beyond the Standard Index, MSCI announced a broader rejig of its Small Cap Index. According to Nuvama, more than a dozen Indian stocks were excluded, reducing the India stock count to 459 from 474. New additions included IREDA, Anthem Biosciences, Fractal Analytics, Pine Labs and Emmvee Photovoltaic, while Cello World, Redtape, Raymond Lifestyle, Indigo Paints, Balu Forge and Blue Jet Healthcare were among the exclusions.Index review days typically witness elevated volumes as passive funds tracking MSCI benchmarks adjust their holdings to match the revised composition.(Disclaimer: Recommendations, suggestions, views and opinions given by the experts are their own.
