The incident led to widespread protests, with demonstrators demanding justice for the victim and criticising remarks by Punjab police officials that were widely seen as blaming her for the attack. Additional superintendent of police (Addl SP) Kamrup Metro district Daisy Gogoi said the suspect was accused of raping the minor girl around 15 days back.
The girl was later moved to the emergency ward after she began bleeding. It was there that she confided in senior doctors about the incident.
