India recorded a current account surplus of $7.1 billion, or 0.7% of GDP, in the January-March quarter of FY26, supported by strong growth in services exports and remittance inflows, according to data released by the Reserve Bank of India on Monday.The surplus was lower than the $13.7 billion, or 1.4% of GDP, recorded in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.The country's merchandise trade deficit widened to $83.4 billion during the quarter, compared with $59.3 billion a year earlier, reflecting higher import outgo. However, this was partly offset by a rise in net services receipts to $60.4 billion from $53.3 billion in the year-ago period, driven by growth in computer services and other business services exports.Also read: FPI exodus from financials cools, but foreign investors remain net sellersAs per the central bank data, remittance inflows remained a key pillar of external stability, with personal transfer receipts, largely including money sent home by Indians working overseas, rising to $43.5 billion in the March quarter from $33.9 billion a year ago. Meanwhile, net outgo under the primary income account declined to $11.1 billion from $11.9 billion, providing additional support to the current account balance.Capital flows in Q4 FY26According to RBI data, net foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows stood at $4.2 billion during the quarter, higher than $0.4 billion in the year-ago period.Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) recorded a net outflow of $12 billion in the March quarter, compared with a net outflow of $5.9 billion a year earlier.Non-resident Indian (NRI) deposits registered net inflows of $3.3 billion, up from $2.8 billion in the corresponding quarter of FY25. Net inflows through external commercial borrowings (ECBs) amounted to $3.6 billion, compared with $7.5 billion a year ago.Foreign exchange reserves increased by $7.2 billion on a balance of payments basis during the quarter, compared with an accretion of $8.8 billion in the year-ago period.FY26 balance of paymentsFor the financial year 2025-26, Indiaโs current account deficit stood at $25.2 billion, equivalent to 0.6% of GDP, compared with a deficit of $22.9 billion, or 0.6% of GDP, in FY25.The merchandise trade deficit widened to $337.3 billion in FY26 from $286.9 billion a year earlier. Net services receipts rose to $216.6 billion from $188.8 billion, while secondary income receipts increased to $143.6 billion from $123.5 billion.Net invisibles receipts stood at $312 billion in FY26, higher than $264 billion in the previous year, primarily on account of net services receipts and net personal transfers.Capital flows in FY26Net FDI inflows increased to $6.9 billion in FY26 from $1 billion in FY25. FPIs recorded net outflows of $16.4 billion during FY26, compared with net inflows of $3.6 billion in the previous year.Foreign exchange reserves declined by $23.6 billion on a balance of payments basis in FY26, compared with a depletion of $5 billion in FY25.
The continued rise in leverage among retail and high-net-worth investors through derivatives and margin trading facilities (MTFs) remains a key concern for the market, S Naren, Executive Director and CIO of ICICI Prudential AMC said at ICICI Securities India Investor Conference 2026.While there has been significant discussion around the sustainability of mutual fund inflows and SIP contributions, Naren believes leverage in the derivatives market poses a much bigger risk than any moderation in mutual fund investments.Also Read | Sensex down over 10K points from Dec peak. "The level of leverage in the derivatives market and the amount of margin trading funding taken from brokers have continued to increase. That is a concern because leverage among retail and HNI investors is rising," he said.According to Naren, even if SIP inflows witness a marginal slowdown, it is unlikely to pose a significant challenge as mutual fund investors are typically long-term participants who invest without leverage. In contrast, derivative traders often operate with borrowed money, increasing risks during periods of market volatility.He noted that margin trading facility exposure is currently at its highest-ever level, highlighting the growing appetite for leveraged market participation.Against this backdrop, Naren sees an interesting contrarian opportunity emerging in segments that have witnessed relentless foreign institutional investor (FII) selling over the last 20 months."If you look for something contrarian today, it would be stocks where FIIs have been persistent sellers over the last 20 months," he said.Among these, private sector banks stand out as one of the most attractive investment opportunities for long-term investors, according to Naren.He believes private banks could emerge as the best-performing sector over the next three years. Whenever they wanted to reduce exposure to India, private banks became the natural source of liquidity," Naren explained.As a result, FIIs have consistently sold private banking stocks over the last 20 months, creating a valuation opportunity for long-term investors willing to take a contrarian view.Beyond equities, Naren remains optimistic about India's debt markets following recent policy measures aimed at improving foreign investor participation.According to him, two critical factors that influence foreign investment in debt marketsโcurrency stability and taxationโhave both moved decisively in India's favour."In debt, there are two factors: currency and taxation. Both have turned very positive, which significantly improves India's attractiveness," he said.Naren believes these developments improve India's chances of gaining inclusion in global bond indices such as the Bloomberg Global Aggregate Bond Index and have contributed to a highly optimistic mood in the domestic debt market.He pointed out that bond yields have moved well below policy rates in several segments, particularly in three-year corporate bonds, creating attractive investment opportunities.However, Naren cautioned that the global fixed-income environment today is very different from what prevailed during the 2013 taper tantrum period.At that time, interest rates across much of the developed world were close to zero, making India's bond yields highly attractive to international investors. Today, investors can earn meaningful returns even in developed-market government bonds."US 30-year government bonds are yielding around 5%, and even Japanese government bond yields are at levels not seen for decades," he said.As a result, the yield differential between India and developed markets has narrowed significantly compared with 2013.Also Read | Gold and silver ETFs slip up to 8% amid Israel attack and crude oil spike. While India has strengthened its macroeconomic position considerably over the past decade, global investors now have a wider range of attractive fixed-income options available to them.Naren also highlighted the relatively small size of foreign portfolio investor exposure to Indian debt compared with equities.According to him, FPI debt investments remain only a fraction of FPI equity allocations. In contrast, foreign investors had built substantial equity positions in India during a period when domestic valuations traded at significant premiums to other emerging markets.He noted that Indian equities became exceptionally expensive after 2023 as domestic investors increasingly channelled savings into equities rather than debt."Valuations in India reached levels that were several times higher than markets like China. In such an environment, FIIs logically chose to reduce equity exposure," he said.At the same time, India has historically adopted a cautious approach towards opening its debt markets to foreign investors.Naren believes this measured approach has helped preserve financial stability while gradually increasing foreign participation in government securities.With improving debt market fundamentals, supportive policy measures, and attractive opportunities emerging in sectors overlooked by foreign investors, Naren sees both fixed income and select equity segments offering compelling opportunities for long-term investors.Commenting on the recent correction in Kospi, Naren said that it is a healthy correction but even now I don't think on market cap terms it is cheap.(Disclaimer: Recommendations, suggestions, views and opinions given by the experts are their own. "I think you would add another, roughly about Rs 3,500 crore of service category as well to it."Citing independent industry reports, Kumar highlighted that by FY30, this parallel economy is set to explode. The product market will expand to over Rs 10,000 crore, while the service and aftermarket ecosystem will chase it tightly at more than Rs 9,000 crore, growing at a combined double-digit compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11% to 12%.This shifting weight from hardware to service fundamentally changes corporate strategies. Historically, the dread of paying steep annual fees to replace purifier filters has acted as a primary barrier keeping the remaining 86% of urban Indian households from adopting organised water purifiers.To beat this, Eureka Forbes pulled off a counter-intuitive strategic gear: they disrupted their own short-term revenue model to secure long-term market share.Last year, the company introduced a range of purifiers featuring "long-life" filters extending the replacement cycle from the traditional 12 months to a full two years."We did that because we fundamentally heard from consumers that there was also a barrier to the category around maintenance cost being high," Kumar reveals. "What two-year filters actually did was they actually lowered the maintenance cost because now you don't have to change filters every year. You have to change once every two years."Digitising a 1980s direct-sales DNAEureka Forbes, a company historically known for its door-to-door service, and making Aquaguard synonymous with water purifiers in India, faced a new piece of necessary upgrade with building digitisation. The multi-billion dollar service landscape required a complete digital overhaul of consumer interactions. The brand that built its empire in the 1980s on the soles of direct-sales agents knocking on suburban doors has had to pivot entirely to an on-demand, algorithmic infrastructure.An army of thousands of field technicians is only as efficient as the software directing them. As Kumar maps out the strategic trajectory for Eureka Forbes over the next three to five years, the company's growth engine eyes two distinct tracks: aggressive geographic widening and targeted product diversification. Geographically, Kumar notes, the company is bypassing deep rural pockets for the time being to focus heavily on Indiaโs rapidly urbanising Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns. Instead, the company is doubling down on smaller towns where they can immediately deploy their signature localised service infrastructure without stretching their logistics network too thin.Simultaneously, the brand is attempting to de-risk its reliance on the kitchen wall by expanding into adjacent consumer durables. Kumar outlined a product pipeline anchored in high-growth, premium categories, including robotic vacuum cleaners, air purifiers, and household water softeners. The underlying playbook here is pure cross-selling. By utilising the same 8,000-strong technician network to service these newer household appliances, Eureka Forbes is betting that its aftermarket footprint can drastically lower its customer acquisition costs; positioning the legacy firm to evolve from a single-product manufacturer into a broader home-health ecosystem player.

Travellers visiting Europe can now use a new online tool under the European Union's Entry/Exit System (EES) to check how many days they are still allowed to stay in participating European countries.The tool is offered for non-EU nationals travelling for short stays and helps visitors track their remaining authorised stay under Europe's immigration rules. It also indicates whether a planned entry into an EES country would be permitted.What is the EES online tool?The EES online tool is an authorised stay verification service available on the European Union's EES website. It allows travellers to calculate the number of days they can still spend in countries covered by the Entry/Exit System.When users submit their details, the system provides an "OK" or "not OK" response regarding their eligibility to enter. It also shows how many days of authorised stay remain.The same service is also available through equipment installed at some external border crossing points.What information do travellers need?To use the tool, travellers must provide:The European country they are visiting or plan to visitTheir travel document type, such as a passportPassport numberThe three-letter code of the country that issued the passportDepending on the purpose of the check, travellers may also need to enter:Their intended date of arrivalTheir intended date of departureBoth arrival and departure dates for future travel plansHow does the calculation work?The tool uses information recorded under the Entry/Exit System to determine the number of days a traveller is authorised to remain in participating European countries.Travellers who are planning a future trip can use the calculator to estimate how long they will be allowed to stay. New Delhi: Jack Danielโs whiskey maker Brown-Formanโs India managing director Gaurav Sabharwal said the US spirits company is โkeenly watchingโ developments on the India-United States trade deal. โThe positive signs have been there. We are very keenly watching that space because most of our business comes from American whiskey.โ The first phase of the bilateral trade agreement between the two countries may be finalised by mid-July, according to government officials. While the US and India discussed a possible trade deal earlier this year, discussions slowed down amid talks on sweeping tariffs.Brown-Forman, which operates as a 100% subsidiary in India, imports its full portfolio and doesnโt manufacture locally as of now. โFrom an overall impact, with inflation going up, petrol prices, transportation - that is going to put some pressure. The other is that as the consumers start looking at fighting inflation, discretionary spend is obviously the first thing that takes a knock. So we are keeping a close watch.โSabharwal said the West Asia war has โso far, not impacted its business in India, adding though that the spirits maker is keeping a close watch on any ripple effect that inflation and supply disruptions may have.โThe Kentucky-based spirits maker recently rejected two potential deals - a nearly $15 billion takeover offer from the US bourbon whisky maker Sazerac and merger talks with French spirits company Pernod Ricard. Last week, the spirits maker reported better-than-expected sales for the March โ26 quarter aided by steady demand for premium spirits, but cautioned about impact on consumer spending behaviour for the year. "We anticipate the operating environment for โfiscal 2027 to remain challenging, as macroeconomic pressures and geopolitical instability continue to negatively impact consumer behaviour and beverage alcohol consumption, particularly within developed markets," the company said in its earnings statement.Sabharwal said ready-to-drink concepts like Jack & Coke โare a growing space in India, but small.โ India had introduced Jack & Coke about three years back in select markets such as Goa, Haryana and Bengaluru. โIt's something which works pretty well with the legal drinking age - 25-30 years old. RTD is a growing space, but a smaller space as far as the Indian spirits and beer consumption goes. So we are still figuring out the rollout plan because one of the critical things is to get the pricing right and obviously one has to make the margins as well. The demand is there, but we just need to manage the system a little better.โ BrownโForman Corporation reported fourth quarter net sales increase by 2% to $912 million compared to the same year-ago period. Operating income decreased 53% to $96 million.For the India unit, while the mainstay remains Jack Danielโs, Sabharwal said the company is gradually building its portfolio to include Woodford Reserve and Herradura.โOne of the biggest mindset shifts is that the propensity to spend has gone up pretty much over the last 10 years. It's about people getting into the legal drinking age and numbers estimate that over the next five years we are going to be adding 20 million people into the legal drinking age every year. The legal drinking age will move anywhere between 18 to 25. Then there is change in social conditioning. Penetration numbers are also increasing. So you have a huge cohort coming in,โ he said.
Lenskart Solutions' shares fell more than 2% to Rs 497 on the BSE on Monday after JPMorgan Chase's offshore subsidiary Copthall Mauritius Investment sold a stake in the company through a Rs 96 crore block deal. Stock exchange data showed that Hong Kong-based hedge fund Viridian Asia Opportunities Master Fund bought 18.96 lakh shares of the company. Viridian bought Lenskart shares at an average price of Rs 508.55 apiece, taking the value of the total stake purchase to more than Rs 96 crore, according to NSE data. The seller of these shares was JPMorgan Chaseโs offshore subsidiary Copthall Mauritius Investment Limited. The transaction was executed on Friday at an average price of Rs 508.55 apiece, which is slightly higher than Fridayโs closing price of Rs 506.45 apiece on NSE.Lenskart has seen multiple block deals recently. The deal, valued at approximately Rs 2,873 crore, also attracted participation from several overseas pension and investment funds.Lenskart share priceLenskart Solutions shares made a subdued market debut in November last year, listing at Rs 395 apiece on NSE at a discount to the IPO price of Rs 402. The shares of the company then surged more than 41% to hit a record high of Rs 557.65 apiece in April this year.The stock is currently down over 9% from that level. However, it is up over 28% from its listing price and 26% from its IPO price. The shares of the company have fallen 2.5% in one week, but gained 15% in 2026 so far. The Indian stock market ended last week in the red, with analysts flagging multiple factors that could keep pressure on Sensex and Nifty when trading resumes on Monday.On Friday, the Sensex closed 117 points lower at 74,243, while the Nifty 50 declined 50 points to settle at 23,367. Among the top laggards on the Sensex were Trent, TCS, Tata Steel, NTPC, HCL Tech, Bharti Airtel, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Reliance Industries, with losses of 1-2%.Here are five key factors likely to drive the stock market in the week ahead.1) Weak global cuesWall Street ended sharply lower on Friday, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq plunging more than 4% to log its steepest single-day decline since April 2025, after a stronger-than-expected US jobs report fuelled concerns that the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates higher for longer.The Nasdaq Composite tumbled 4.2%, dragged down by a more than 6% slide in Nvidia and an almost 8% drop in Broadcom. Reuters, citing a US official, reported that the military believes the four Iranian drones were targeting regional maritime traffic. US Central Command said on X that it subsequently struck Iranโs surveillance sites in Goruk and Qeshm Island, both located along the Strait of Hormuz.Meanwhile, Iranโs Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had targeted US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain in retaliation for the strikes and fired on four tankers attempting to cross the strait without its permission. Elevated interest rates typically make bonds more attractive relative to equities, weighing on stock market sentiment.Technical view on NiftyThe benchmark Nifty index ended lower for the second consecutive week, reflecting the cautious undertone prevailing in the market, said Sudeep Shah, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at SBI Securities.According to Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, Nifty 50 has been moving within a defined range as markets digest the RBIโs policy announcement. He noted that sentiment remains weak, with the index continuing to trade below key moving averages. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) also remains subdued, indicating a lack of positive momentum.โIn the near term, the index is likely to consolidate within the 23,300โ23,500 range. Can the search for a hotel room lead to a business idea? It did, for Alok Mishra.In 2014, during a trip with his wife, Mishra needed a hotel room for six hours as he did not want to drive late at night. But he was asked to pay for a full day and subjected to a series of intrusive questions despite being marriedโand was finally refused a room. โThat got me thinking that there might be travellers like me who need rooms only for a few hours but have to pay for an entire day. Later, while working in the US, I came across pay-for-use concepts and felt that India needed a more flexible, customer-friendly model,โ he says.That experience led to the launch of Bag2Bag in 2019, an online platform for booking hotels, service apartments, homestays and other accommodations, with a focus on hourly stays.The business started gaining momentum around 2021. Bag2Bagโs hourly-stay revenue has risen from roughly Rs 50 lakh in 2021 to Rs 5-6 crore today. The company has served more than 1 lakh customers, lists over 10,000 properties across India and offers hourly stays at 6,000-7,000 of them. The service is available in more than 50 cities, though Bengaluru and Mumbai remain its strongest markets.Also read | The safe keepers: Inside India's booming locker economyโPeople now understand that this is a practical solution rather than a niche service. One of our biggest achievements has been to help normalise the category. Earlier, hourly stays were often associated with couples seeking privacy,โ he says. โWe deliberately broadened the use case by allowing family bookings, including travellers with children. We wanted people to see hourly stays for what they really areโ a convenient accommodation option.โHOUR OF NEED That convenience is growing as online hotel booking platforms that allow short stays are on the rise. Alongside Bag2Bag, there is Noida-based Brevistay, Bengaluruheadquartered MiStay, Mumbaiโs Hourly Rooms and Qwiksta, all specialising in micro stays. Larger travel platforms like MakeMyTrip, Agoda and Goibibo have also introduced hourly booking options.Like Bag2Bag, Brevistay was born out of a travel inconvenience. In 2016, cofounders Prateek Singh, Aditya Naithani, Shubham Agarwal, Avnish Kumar and Nikhil Pathak arrived in Manali at 5 am only to find that hotels would not allow early check-ins without charging for an extra night. The friends went on to cofound the travel tech startup Brevistay, which raised Rs 3 crore in 2023 and today reports revenue of about Rs 18 crore. It has 15 lakh registered users, 4 lakh monthly active users and around 11,000 listed hotels, including brands such as Ginger, Ramada and Blue Motel.LONG JOURNEY Getting there, however, was not easy.Pathak, cofounder and chief technology officer of Brevistay, says, โThe challenge in this segment is not customers but hotels. In 2016, many hoteliers would simply bang the phone on us. Some agreed in principle but didnโt want their properties listed publicly and preferred bookings to come through offline calls. It took us nearly two years before we started seeing meaningful traction and recurring bookings,โ says Pathak.The same resistance greeted MiStay when it launched in 2016. Starting with a pilot in Delhi, MiStay has since expanded to more than 100 cities. Shwetha Sameernath, general manager, business and growth, MiStay, says, โWhen we launched, scepticism was high. Most hotels were uncomfortable with the model, concerned about guest quality and operational challenges. Over time, that changed as hotels began seeing it as a revenue opportunity.โMiStay tackled resistance through education and curation. The company worked to show hoteliers that short stays served a broad and legitimate market of business travellers, transit passengers and day-use guests. It also selectively onboarded premium hotel brands, helping build credibility for the category. โWhen hotels see actual customer segments across varied, legitimate use cases, it builds their confidence that the model wonโt compromise their brand,โ says Sameernath, adding that the concept is now largely normalised.Also read | Major change in buyer behaviour as e-scooters race deeper into BharatPathak says the customer has evolved as well. Brevistay continues to market actively to couples, but he argues that the category should no longer be viewed through that lens. โThereโs nothing illegal happening. In fact, thereโs no law that prevents consenting adults from booking a hotel room. The issue was perception, not legality. What eventually changed minds was revenue,โ he says. โOnce hotels realised they could sell the same room multiple times in a day and generate seven or eight bookings instead of one, the business case became impossible to ignore.โThe use cases have expanded too. Back in 2017, couples accounted for nearly 90% of Brevistayโs bookings. Today, that figure is down to 50-60%. Business travellers, transit passengers, tourists looking to freshen up between journeys, students travelling for exams and people attending interviews or meetings have all emerged as important customer segments.Hotels, meanwhile, have had to adapt operationally. Mishra says the biggest challenge is that traditional hotel system was never designed for flexible check-ins and check-outs. Bag2Bag addressed this by developing its own software platform for partner hotels. โOnce they realised they could monetise idle inventory and generate additional revenue from rooms that would otherwise remain empty, adoption became much easier,โ he says.REVENUE CHECKS IN For Sameernath, the turning point was the entry of premium hotel brands. โToday, acceptance has grown across the ecosystem. Channel managers and property management systems are evolving to support slot-based bookings, and customers increasingly treat hourly booking as the natural way to reserve a room for less than a day,โ she says.Also read | Indian tourists go viral for all wrong reasons. Reliability and brand trust are becoming increasingly important. โWhether itโs a three-star or a five-star property, even if a branded hotel costs 20-25% more, customers prefer it because they know what theyโre getting,โ he says. The economics are compelling for hotels too. Sameernath points out that average hotel occupancy in India is under 65%, while daytime occupancy can fall to as low as 30% as guests check out in the morning and new arrivals come in much later. Platforms like MiStay help hotels monetise those idle hours by attracting guests who would never have booked a full-day room. โFor hotels near airports or railway stations, the upside is even greater. A room priced at Rs 8,000 for a full night could earn Rs 3,500-4,000 for a daytime slot and another Rs 6,000 for the nightโgenerating `10,000-plus from the same room in a single day,โ she says.CHANGING PERCEPTION MiStay today works with brands like IHG, Pride, Ramada, The Park, Radisson and Novotel IHG, while Brevistay is in discussions with Hyatt. Sameernath says that on the demand side, once customers experience flexible booking, they donโt go back. Their repeat rate reflects this, as 48% of MiStayโs monthly business comes from repeat guests โThe pay-per-use model in hospitality is the same transformation that happened in transport. You no longer book a cab for a full day; you pay for the distance. Hotels are heading the same way,โ she says.Pathak believes the next wave of growth will be driven by younger travellers. โTheyโre vocal about spending time with their partners and donโt carry the hesitation earlier generations did. In metros, the industry has largely moved beyond the old perceptions, and hourly stays are increasingly viewed as a convenience product rather than something unusual.โThe customer, it seems, has reached the destination.
