The arrest comes weeks after Calcutta high court's vacation bench refused to extend the interim protection in five FIRs granted to the TMC strongman. Justice Partha Sarathi Chatterjee referred the matter to a regular bench. Earlier, Khan was granted interim protection by Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya till May 26, considering the repolls there on May 21.

A turnout of over 87% was recorded during the repolling in Falta
Voting for the Falta Assembly constituency seat was originally held on April 29 2026, as part of the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections.
"The counting is progressing peacefully. Adequate security arrangements have been made at the counting centre," a poll panel official said.
