Capt. Eitan Shmuel Lamberg, 21, a tank officer from Mishmar HaShiv'a, was killed when a Hezbollah anti-tank missile struck an IDF tank north of the Litani River in southern Lebanon, hours after Israel and Lebanon agreed to implement a US-mediated ceasefire
According to US Central Command, American forces issued repeated warnings to the crew of the Botswana-flagged vessel over the course of 24 hours as it sailed towards Iranโs Kharg Island.
The tanker, which had sailed from Russia's Arctic port of Murmansk, was suspected of flying under a false flag and was intercepted with support from Britain, French President Emmanuel Macron said.
"This operation took place in the Atlantic Ocean, on the high seas, with the support of several partners, including the United Kingdom, in strict compliance with the law of the sea," said PM Macron.
The ruptured tank contained about 900,000 gallons (3.4 million liters) of white liquor, and tests confirmed that contamination entered the nearby Columbia River, officials have said.
The ships receiving the oil are often part of Iranโs โshadow fleet,โ a fleet of old, rusting tankers that obscure their owners and may switch their flags to those of countries with little oversight.
Moscow and Kyiv have frequently attacked each other's ports and tankers since the start of the war. Neither country immediately claimed responsibility for the newly reported attack.
Since Friday, officials have warned that the tank, which contains a flammable chemical used in plastics and manufacturing, could rupture or explode.
The tank contains methyl methacrylate, a โhighly toxicโ substance which can impact the respiratory system, and can cause skin and eye irritation, HAZMAT program manager, Division Chief Freeman said.
