The Central Asian nation of Uzbekistan is a hidden gem that is fast being discovered by a new generation of international travellers, including those from China. At the Center for Islamic Civilization, a popular tourist attraction in the capital Tashkent, a cross-section of tourists told RTHK that the country is becoming increasingly accessible and a must-visit destination. A traveller from Shaanxi province in China, surnamed Wang, said he was attracted by a blend of post-Soviet history and Islamic architecture. "I just want to experience the fourth largest republic of the former Soviet Union. Just to see how they've developed since breaking away from the Soviet Union, and to see what changes have taken place in the city's appearance," he said. "So I came to stroll around and take a look, just to experience the different culture of another country." Wang noted that travel has become significantly easier. "Itโs visa-free for 30 days," he explained, having arrived via Almaty, Kazakhstan. Wang also noted that more Chinese people have been visiting Uzbekistan in the past few years. That sense of discovery is echoed by European visitors. "We didnโt know anyone else who has been here, so it was really exciting to come somewhere completely different and experience a completely different culture," said William Norton, a tourist from Scotland. But he also met some challenges. "Language is the main one โ we donโt speak Uzbek or Russian, which would help a lot. "Apart from that, obviously the lack of public transport as well has been a little bit of a problem in Tashkent. The metro is easier, however, in other places in Uzbekistan like Samarkand." Yet, for Norton, those very challenges are part of the charm. "You go to other places in Europe that are equally as beautiful if not less beautiful and they are absolutely rammed with people, so it's nice that it's a little bit quieter here." His travel companion, Christian Cannarella, agreed, saying their friends back in Scotland were surprised by their travel plans. He said people in Uzbekistan have been very welcoming and visiting the landmarks is an "incredible" experience. For travellers from other Islamic nations, the attraction lies in the shared cultural heritage. The government is planning to introduce a reservation system for the Po Pin Chau section of the High Island Reservoir East Dam in Sai Kung to better manage visitor flows and protect hiking trails from excessive wear and tear, according to a paper submitted to the Legislative Council. This came as the number of visitors at the Po Pin Chau section reached capacity during previous Golden Week holidays. Authorities said the proposal would also help improve visitor experience by spreading arrivals across different time slots. "Given that hiking trails in other country parks currently do not require reservation, the government will consider piloting the system at the Po Pin Chau section, collecting data for evaluating the effectiveness," it stated. On marine conservation, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department has proposed designating the coral areas on both the eastern and western sides of Sharp Island, including the tombolo, as a marine park covering an area of approximately 63 hectares. The department has already launched a public consultation and aims to complete the statutory designation process by mid-2027. The paper also outlined the government's broader eco-tourism push, including the "Four Peaks" tourism project featuring The Peak, Lantau Peak, Tai Mo Shan and Sai Kung Hoi. It said the department would launch a thematic website, promotional videos and other publicity materials in the second half of 2026. "While promoting the 'Four Peaks' tourism, the AFCD will continue to enhance promotion of hiking safety and outdoor etiquette and codes, reminding visitors to protect the natural environment," it stated. Newly appointed Competition Commission chairman Jat Sew-tong on Friday said the body hopes to come up with proposed amendments to the Competition Ordinance regarding bid-rigging within this legislative year. This comes after bid-rigging over a building maintenance project was suspected to have taken place at the Wang Fuk Court housing estate in Tai Po where a massive blaze last year claimed 168 lives. Jat, who took office in May, said the commission is considering different ways to improve the law, such as through introducing criminal liability or increasing civil penalties. โWe are looking at all possibilities to see how we could make the ordinance effective and have a sufficient deterrent effect to this kind of behaviour and we hope we could achieve a situation where this kind of behaviour would no longer continue,โ he said. The barrister noted that the government has already included a "non-collusion" clause in large-scale renovation project tenders as a way to prevent bid-rigging. โI understand that the government may consider making a requirement that in tenders of that kind, the non-collusion clause will be in the form of a statutory declaration,โ he said. โWhoever puts in the tender will have to make a statutory declaration that they are doing it independently, without collusion with any other party. Therefore, making that statutory declaration would by itself attract criminal liability if it is a false declaration.โ Jat also said that from July, members of the public will be allowed to attend part of the commission's meetings, as a way to enhance transparency. Police arrested three people on Wednesday on suspicion of being involved in illicit fuel activity in Kwai Tsing District. Police seized about 1,600 litres of gasoline, with a suspected market value of HK$50,000, at a suspected illicit fuel station near Kwai Tai Road. At a press briefing on Thursday, officers said two arrestees were loading fuel into a private vehicle when police carried out their raid, while the third arrestee allegedly helped with operations at the facility. One reportedly entered Hong Kong on a two-way exit permit and police suspect that this person violated their conditions of stay. Chief Inspector Koo Man-kai called on residents not to use illicit fuel. "According to the Dutiable Commodities Ordinance, both buying and selling illicit fuel is a serious crime. Offenders are subject to two-years imprisonment and a HK$1 million fine upon conviction, and the vehicle involved will be confiscated," he said. The operation unfolded after a fire broke out on Tuesday night due to suspected illicit fuel activity at an industrial building in the district. The Fire Services Department received reports of the blaze at around 10.30pm, and deployed two hoses and two breathing apparatus teams to handle the incident at Kwai Tak Industrial Centre. It said the fire started from an oil tank which spread to a light goods vehicle as well as the building's exterior walls. Firefighters carried out an investigation afterwards and believed the site was used as an illicit fuel station after finding traces of flammable materials, burnt marks, and reviewing surveillance camera footage. The department said it is actively pushing for relevant legislative amendments, which includes higher penalties, expanding the legal liability to include buyers of fuel, and strengthening enforcement powers. A secondary school principal who is suspected of verbally abusing a security guard in Singapore has been relieved of his duties, after the school he worked for on Wednesday said they did not accept his resignation. The managers of San Wui Commercial Society Secondary School said Lee Cheuk-hing's vulgar behaviour violated the Education Bureau's Guidelines on Teachers' Professional Conduct, and tarnished the school's reputation. In a statement, the school's incorporated management committee said it did not accept Lee's resignation on May 28, six days after the alleged incident took place during a school trip. If Lee's resignation was accepted, he would have stayed until the end of August. "If he were to stay on as principal until August 31, the school's normal operation would be severely impacted, hindering teachers and students from moving on as quickly as possible," it read. "The incorporated management committee therefore acted on the instruction of the [school's] sponsoring body ... by immediately dismissing Lee Cheuk-hing and relieving him of all his duties." Lee's position will be taken up by his deputy, while a search for his replacement will commence later. Moving forward, the committee will set up a task force of education veterans to review the school's administrative and personnel matters, and provide relevant suggestions. A one-and-a-half-month-old baby boy, who does not possess a birth certificate and was reportedly delivered via homebirth, has been temporarily moved to a sheltering facility following a court order. The Social Welfare Department on Wednesday said the baby is under professional care, adding that it has applied for a child protection order from the court following the arrest of a couple said to be his parents. Police, meanwhile said they have obtained the DNA sample of the boy, as well as samples from the couple, for verification. Officers said the test results are not out yet. The couple was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of child neglect after failing to provide proof that they had taken the infant for medical checks. They previously refused DNA testing to prove their relationship with the baby and failed to register a birth within 42 days set out in the law. Following the coupleโs arrest, the baby underwent checks at the hospital and medical workers found no apparent injuries on him. Senior social work officer Stephanie Lee said the department will submit a report to the court to decide the next steps after meeting with the couple. โWe will collect the information and then make the assessment and then also involve all other concerned parties. The time [taken for the report submission] will be subject to the progress of this assessment or the information gathered,โ she said. When asked if the department will hand the baby back to the couple if it is found they are his biological parents, she stressed that the department will prioritise the baby's well-being. She added that if the couple is proven unfit to care for the child, the department may seek a guardianship order. The couple said they have another child that was placed in foster care in Sweden a number of years ago. The Immigration Department said it has reached out to the Swedish authorities to seek more information, including her identity there and foster care arrangements. A record number of teams will join this month's Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races as the event is upgraded to mark its 50th anniversary, organisers said on Tuesday. The Hong Kong Tourism Board and Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association said the races between June 27 and 28 will have more than 220 teams and 4,500 competitors from 16 regions and countries, including Indonesia which will make its debut. As part of the golden jubilee celebrations, there will be an invitational cup featuring six local fishermen teams competing in wooden dragon boats, while the winners of nine main events will also battle it out for the title of "ultimate champions".
