Secretary for Health Lo Chung-mau on Monday said the newly appointed founding dean of the cityโs third medical school possesses relevant experience. The government welcomed the Hong Kong University of Science and Technologyโs appointment of physician-scientist King Li, who had the same role at Carle Illinois College of Medicine of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in the United States. Li possesses โinvaluable practical experienceโ in establishing a new medical school, Lo said. โI look forward to the HKUST's medical school continuing to smoothly advance the relevant preparatory work under his leadership, including the recruitment of the teaching and research team, the formulation of teaching programmes, and participation in the overall planning of the Ngau Tam Mei campus and the new integrated teaching and research hospital, deepening collaboration with local healthcare institutions and teaching partners, as well as full co-operation with the Medical Council of Hong Kong throughout the accreditation exercise for the curriculum,โ Lo said. A Legco subcommittee tasked with supporting the government's efforts to create Hong Kong's first five-year plan has engaged with more than 4,000 people and received about 570 written submissions in the past month, its chairman Stanley Ng said on Friday. Ng said the Subcommittee on Hong Kong's Work to Actively Dovetail with the National 15th Five-Year Plan has held four meetings and 99 consultation sessions during this period. "We have actively contacted different sectors, and invited experts, community groups, and stakeholders to participate extensively. We have listened to the voices of the grassroots and gathered professional insights, which allowed us to gain suggestions that have a broad coverage, are highly targeted and are substantive," he said. "This would provide the foundation and support for the government to formulate a five-year plan that resonates with public opinion." The principal of a school in Tuen Mun who allegedly verbally abused a security guard during a school trip to Singapore has tendered his resignation. In an interview with Dot Dot News, Lee Cheuk-hing issued a public apology over the incident. He said as a school leader, he should have led by example and exercised restraint under all circumstances. Lee added that he will fully cooperate with all arrangements and investigations by the schoolโs governing body and the Education Bureau. He was suspended earlier this week after an online video purportedly showed him swearing at a security officer. The incorporated management committee of San Wui Commercial Society Secondary School said Lee submitted his resignation on Thursday. Former lawmaker Edmund Wong, who is an independent manager of the committee, stressed that the welfare of students is their top priority. He said the committee will hold a meeting in the next one or two days to decide whether to accept Lee's resignation. โThere are various factors to be considered whether to accept the request to resign, such as whether school operations will be significantly affected, and whether the decision meets the expectations of students and parents,โ he said. Wong added that an internal probe is still under way and a report will be submitted to the Education Bureau once the investigation is concluded. The Education Bureau, for its part, said it has been notified by the school of the principal's resignation. It added that it will provide appropriate support to ensure normal school operations are maintained and the well-being of students is protected.
