Bring Me the Beauties: A Model Cult does a messy job of telling the story of Frederick von Mierers, who spent the 1980s luring models into his spiritual enlightenment society, Eternal Values. Von Mierers’ life was all lies, chaos and mystery and it would be hard to set it out coherently, however diligently you tried. But this is like trying to keep up with an erratic bar-room raconteur who keeps glossing over the important bits so they can skip on to the next bit of gossip. From a young age, the author was told that one of her ancestors had drawn some of the first maps of Ireland. Then she found a photograph, and embarked on a journey to discover his story Every family has its myths. In mine, we were told that one of our antecedents had worked on the first maps of Ireland. As a child, I used to picture a solitary person in unspecified period dress – a tailcoat, perhaps some kind of cravat – striding pensively about fields and mountains, pen in hand. On summer holidays, I would stare out of the window of our red car as Donegal or Galway rolled by and wonder that such a task could be achieved. How did one man set about drawing a map of a whole country, of these towns and strands and trees and rivers? All myths comprise a great deal of fanciful embroidery through which runs the distinct thread of truth: time and retelling will always refract reality. This mapper preyed on my mind. I thought about him, always, when I travelled around Ireland. I thought about him in my final year of school, when my geography exam required me to analyse a square of an unknown map. The photographer loved to record the small details of life, so it was only fitting that his family should organise a send-off inspired by his work. ‘Funerals can be really beautiful,’ says the person tasked with recording the event Funerals are conventionally designed to smooth a person into graceful solemnity, carefully editing out the unsavoury bits of a life. But Martin Parr spent more than half a century sending up the idiosyncratic and the awkward, in a way that was sometimes unflattering, mischievous, and always unflinching. So his own funeral was never going to be a typical farewell. At the ceremony at the chapel in Woodlands Memorial Garden near Bristol, people who had known Parr throughout his life spoke, and Parr’s favourite music played – guests arrived to Astrud Gilberto, João Gilberto and Stan Getz’s The Girl from Ipanema. Parr had recently photographed the original girl from Ipanema, Helô Pinheiro, who is now 82. With the help of the staff at the Martin Parr Foundation, the family organised the ultimate Martin Parr send-off after the ceremony: a colourful country fete-themed celebration decked out with bunting, with clingfilm-wrapped sandwiches, cupcakes with sad faces on, a collection of teapots with natty tea cosies, and a tombola of unwanted Christmas gifts – in memory of the annual auction the Parrs used to put on. (The proceeds went to food poverty charity the Trussell Trust.) The Art of Dining, a collaborative duo creating interactive dining experiences formed of Parr’s chef daughter Ellen and set designer Alice Hodge, recreated the food from many of the late photographer’s most famous images. The Last One Laughing and Taskmaster star’s supremely daft mockumentary is so hilarious it deserves to be paraded around the streets. Hopefully it can run and run This is a punt, but I’d be prepared to bet money that Sam Campbell knows Birdemic: Shock and Terror inside out. Birdemic is, of course, one of the worst movies ever made; a comprehensively inept labour of love about a bird attack, made for pennies over the course of four years. It’s one of those films that is so fascinatingly bad from every angle that it ends up becoming a glorious piece of outsider art. It is the sort of film that Campbell’s new sitcom Make That Movie absolutely worships. You probably know Campbell from Taskmaster and Last One Laughing, two different entertainment formats that he managed to destroy and rebuild in his image, by respectively performing a genuinely unhinged song about female comedians and dressing up as a giant bird. There is something of the alien about the man. About as far from an everyman as you are likely to find, Campbell’s stock in trade is essentially looking a bit like Paul McCartney would if you froze him in time a millisecond after bopping him on the nose. Irish writer-director John Carney brilliantly brings together Rudd’s washed up wedding-singer and Jonas’s insecure ex-boyband superstar Once again, Irish writer-director John Carney delivers an aspartame rush of enjoyment with this terrific comedy of bromance and betrayal in the world of music, starring Nick Jonas (from the Jonas Brothers) as Danny Wilson, a preeningly insecure ex-boyband superstar trying to go solo and searching for a hit single, and Paul Rudd as Rick Power, a washed up wedding-singer who rashly plays Danny a catchy song he’s been working on. Power Ballad is about making it and dreaming big, about every busker never giving up on hopes of one day being mega. But as so often with Carney, it’s about something else, usually left unacknowledged in movies about music or any sort of showbusiness: the terrible binary of success and failure. For every star there is an invisible army of losers, the sad cases who used to be the star’s home town friends or early collaborators and have a lifelong task ahead of them coming to terms with not making it. Leicester Square theatre, London The comic delivers gags about her life and neighbourhood with choice descriptions and brutal punchlines ‘What comes out of here,” says Fatiha El-Ghorri, indicating her mouth, “and this” – how she presents to the world – “don’t match.” From that contrast – a kindly-seeming woman in a hijab peddling gobby East End standup – this Taskmaster graduate and rising standup star draws much of her comic power. She’s a British Moroccan Muslim from Hackney, where she grew up getting mugged three times a day and learned how to handle herself. Touring show Cockney Stacking Doll offers us a tour of her world: her divorces and online dating; her family; encounters on the buses and streets of London, all addressed with a blunt lack of sentimentality and a robust sense of her own ridiculousness. Perhaps the show is over-reliant on the brutal punchline: too many gags conclude with “you fink I’m playin’ wiv you, bruv?” or an even less compromising “they punched him in the fucking face”. El-Ghorri might retort (and does, in what she calls her Ted Talk section at the end of the show) that she’s had to be tough to get where she is, where so few people like her are invited to be. Fair enough. And there’s plenty of wit here – see her choice description of the Broadway Market neighbourhood in which she was raised as now all “kefir, lidos and polyamory”. Two widows of the same man remain behind in an abandoned mountain village in Rajan Kathet and Sunir Pandey’s visually arresting documentary In the valley of Dhorpatan in western Nepal, winter arrives with unforgiving intensity. Clouds of freezing mist gradually descend, making the rocky terrain look starkly barren, a lonesome void amid vertiginous mountain ranges. At this time of the year, most of the inhabitants migrate south to warmer regions – except for two. Unfolding at a languid pace, Rajan Kathet and Sunir Pandey’s feature-length documentary debut casts its gaze on Ratima and Kalima, elderly caretakers tasked with watching over the abandoned village. Widows to the same man, they make for an unusual yet beguiling pair whose dynamic wavers between warmth and discord. The two women’s different temperaments make for an engaging contrast. The older, jaded Ratima spends her days in a haze of alcohol and regrets. Meanwhile, younger Kalima has a sunnier attitude, which she extends to creatures big and small; she even has pet names for the livestock. Once the second wife and hence a romantic rival, Kalima now takes care of the ailing Ratima with sisterly tenderness. Their daily routines – simple meals by the fire, reminiscences about their departed husband – are juxtaposed with expansive wide shots of the desolate landscape. Continue reading...

A Jewish organisation, the Community Security Group, asked NSW police to provide a static police presence at the Chanukah by the Sea event for the entirety of the celebration. NSW police declined to provide a static police presence for the entire event, instead allocating a “mobile tasking, that is police officers were instructed to attend the event from time to time during the evening”. At the time the two gunmen opened fire on Jewish community members, there were four police at Archer Park. Within 29 seconds of the start of the shooting, 11 people had been shot, 10 of them fatally. Three police officers were shot and injured in the court of the attack. Within five minutes, there were 11 police officers on the scene. Having enjoyed breakout fame on Taskmaster and Last One Laughing, the subversive Australian comic has been handed the reins of his own, very strange sitcom. Get ready for feet animations and a character called Super-Breast … The premise of Make That Movie, Australian comedian Sam Campbell’s deeply strange new Channel 4 series, is not easy to describe. A show-within-a-show, it stars its creator as an alternative Sam Campbell: rather than his real-life idiosyncratic standup self, he’s a pompous director whose well of inspiration has run dry. So he invites the public to share their (invariably bonkers) ideas for movies, which he and his dysfunctional crew then develop into real feature films. This all occurs within the framework of a shonky reality programme; each episode concludes with the film’s premiere. Think Changing Rooms, but instead of Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and Handy Andy renovating somebody’s living room, it’s Campbell and co bringing to life a man called Mick’s fantasy about a couple who can’t be snakes at the same time, yet one of them is always a snake. In other words, the actual Campbell is the one who has been given carte blanche to turn his own invariably bonkers ideas into reality. He claims the production company behind the show were very hands-off – partly because they were so busy working on an animated Ricky Gervais series about cats “so we sort of got left to our own devices”. It helped that Channel 4’s head of comedy, Charlie Perkins – a longtime champion and collaborator of Campbell’s – was also “very trusting. I don’t know if she really got [the concept] when we were first talking about it. When we’d made it, I think she understood it a tiny bit more.” Continue reading...
