King Street Social Club, North Shields Teeing up a forthcoming solo album, the rapper doesnโt reheat his old Beastie Boys sound, instead throwing down everything from ballads to Kraftwerk references Adam Yauch AKA MCAโs death in 2012 from cancer aged 47 effectively ended the stellar recording and performing career of hip-hop trio Beastie Boys. Since then, bandmates Adam โAd-Rockโ Horovitz and Michael โMike Dโ Diamond have made few public appearances but the latter is now back in the fray. His first appearance on a British stage in almost 20 years is in, of all places, a bingo hall in the north east, where he surely becomes the first legendary rapper to yell: โWassup, North Shields?!โ With turntables on stage, hip-hop clobber in the audience, a six-piece band in matching outfits and bingo tables at the back, this unlikely show feels simultaneously low-key and an event. Mike D is backed by 5D โ who include his sons and are more than half his 60 years โ whose slamming grooves and crunching guitars arenโt Beastie Boys reheated, but certainly have the same inimitable joie de vivre. Supporters filling north London pubs said they were already gratified by Premier League win The streets of Holloway, usually bustling with families and trolly-dragging shoppers, were uncharacteristically quiet on Saturday afternoon. But shortly after the clock struck 5pm, loud roars echoed through the north London high street, located a short walk away from the Emirates stadium, as Arsenal walked on to the pitch for the Champions League final. While the team, still basking in the glory of their Premier League win last week, were in Budapest for their final showdown against Paris Saint-Germain, Gunners โ or Gooners, as they are colloquially known โ came out to support the team on their home turf. The loud online hate aimed at two pop stars with polar-opposite styles suggests a shrinking realm of acceptability in which women can exist. That is, you suspect, the point For an eye-catching spring/summer 2026 look, why not try one of the infinitely fun ways you can dress up misogyny? Thereโs buttoned-up faux concern. The haughty pince-nez of high dudgeon. The splashy feather boa of outrage. If youโre really bold, why not the full birthday suit of naked disgust? There are far more acceptable options, apparently, than there are for actually dressing as a famous female pop star in 2026. Between the parallel uproar over extremely different outfits worn recently by CMAT and by Olivia Rodrigo, it almost seems as though there are in fact no options at all for how a woman should look in public. Funny, that. Yesterday, the Irish and American musicians each commented on recent backlash over their appearances that came from the scummy bottom of the internet. On Sunday, CMAT performed at BBC Radio 1โs Big Weekend in Sunderland. When the BBC posted clips of her performance on Instagram, comments about her body were so vile that the broadcaster had to disable them; tellingly, clips from the same festival featuring smaller-bodied female performers still have comments enabled. โItโs been very hard to try and describe how difficult the last few days since the bbcr1 big weekend have been,โ CMAT posted, saying the commentary caused her โdeep sadnessโ. The great showman has spent the last 50 years on stage, followed by his adoring โfanilowsโ - but heโs not slowing down yet. Here, he talks about cancer, ridicule and roaring success His name is Barry, he is a showman โ as we all know. But late last year, after more than 50 years of constant performing, it began to look like the Manilow show was coming to an end. In December, the 82-year-old singer announced he was about to undergo surgery for lung cancer, and postponed his planned live shows. Thankfully, the cancer had not spread and the treatment was successful. But around the same time he released a new single, ominously titled Once Before I Go. The accompanying video showed him saying goodbye to his palatial quarters at the Las Vegas Westgate resort, where he has had a residency for the past eight years, and wistfully reminiscing over old costumes, intercut with footage of him in his 80s prime. It sure looked as if he was shutting up shop. But no: โThat was just an accident,โ says Manilow of the video. Really? โYeah, we didnโt do that on purpose.โ The song was actually written in the early 80s by veteran songwriter Peter Allen, he explains, but he felt he was too young to sing it when he first heard it. โItโs a beautiful song and itโs got nothing to do with me. Itโs saying goodbye to a romance, you know. But it just so happened that it sounds like Iโm talking about myself.โ Far from going anywhere, Manilowโs got a new album out next week, and a string of new tour dates lined up. Continue reading...

Microsoft; PC, Xbox Series X/S (PS5 due later) Dreamy vistas of the countryโs natural beauties are stunningly delivered โ but wonโt distract from thrilling high-end driving adventures The Forza Horizon games have always been about drama. Not just the tension and excitement of racing, but also the sensory impact of the natural environment โ the sun rising over a dense city, rain clouds hovering above a valley floor. There are moments in this game โ perhaps after emerging from a dense forest, or coming up from an underpass โ where Mount Fuji briefly appears in the distance, hazy yet majestic, the Platonic ideal of a volcano โ and it almost takes your breath away. Fans of this series have been waiting years for Japan and now here it is, the whole country, reduced, remixed and repackaged as a driving paradise. In many ways, Forza Horizon 6 is a continuation of what this series has always been about. You enter a festival-style driving competition then drive around a vast map splattered with various races and challenges, earning reputation by competing well and buying new vehicles for your extensive garage. There are slight changes this time โ you start as a rookie not an established legend, so you have to qualify to enter the festival, and Playground has re-introduced the need to unlock successive levels of competition bringing back the sense of progression from the earliest titles in the series. You start out clattering about in slower C-class vehicles on easier circuits and have to work hard to start lining up against super cars such as the Ferrari J50 or Lamborghini Huracรกn. The open world driving sim has roared through locations from Colorado to Australia, its authentic feel resting on exhaustive research. But, as the team explain, this was the toughest challenge yet Since the arrival of the original Forza Horizon in 2012, a game that revolutionised open world driving sims by setting players loose in a virtual Colorado, British developer Playground Games has promised authenticity with its settings. For each instalment, design teams are sent out on location to take thousands of photos, hours of video, even detailed captures of the sky, before construction of a virtual copy begins. Itโs a huge undertaking. But it seems that for much of the past decade, one country remained slightly out of reach โ an intimidating prospect. โJapan has been on our shortlist for several games now,โ says design director, Torben Ellert. โBut we just didnโt feel like we were ready to take on the challenge of building it.โ Itโs not just about the sheer variety of the countryโs landscape. Thereโs something else going on. Most video game players hold an image of what it is like to explore Japan. It may be inspired by the fictitious rural town of Inaba in Persona 4, or the busy docks of Yokosuka in Shenmue, or perhaps the neon-drenched Kabukichล district of Tokyo, which forms a regular backdrop in the Yakuza series. For decades, gamers around the world have been bombarded with images of the country that are often highly stylised and fragmented, but nonetheless potent and persuasive. As art director Don Arceta puts it, โwith Japan thereโs such an expectation [of] what gamers want - itโs a certain version of Japan that they picture.โ Continue reading...
