Pontiffโs resolve to highlight plight of migrants has aligned him with Spanish PM, whose inner circle and party are mired in corruption allegations While Pope Leo XIV isnโt due to touch down in Madrid until 10.30am on Saturday, his presence in the Spanish capital is already verging on the ubiquitous. The smiling, avuncular face of the first US pontiff greets visitors from posters, from the sides of buses, from commemorative travel cards and even from the digital screens on the metro system, where it flickers up between adverts for sun cream and banking deals. The letter was the first public message Zelensky has written directly to Putin since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022
State election officials continue to work through the uncounted primary ballots, a process that could take days or weeks A leftwing US political commentator has described the UK governmentโs decision to ban him from entering the country as โhaunting and hilariousโ and โKafkaesqueโ. Cenk Uygur, the founder and a host on Young Turks, a well-established progressive media outlet, was banned earlier this week from entering the UK to attend a speaking engagement alongside Hasan Piker, a Twitch streamer who has become a popular figure on the US political left. While the technology is set to play a growing role in modern warfare, there remains an unresolved ethical challenge Should the AI-powered drones of the future have a licence to kill? The question is becoming ever more pressing as governments and the defence industry acknowledge that drone systems will play an increasingly crucial role in future warfare. With drones being deployed in huge numbers in the Ukraine war and AI being used to assist bombing missions in the Iran conflict, there is an expectation among some observers that weapons will have to operate with increased operational autonomy, which means they will need something approximating a moral framework. A new South Carolina act will exempt some heirsโ property owners from increased property taxes In a move that protects vulnerable people from forced property sales, South Carolina recently enacted an act that could help families keep land that has been passed down for generations. The Heirsโ Property Tax Relief Act, signed into law by Henry McMaster, the stateโs governor, on 15 May, prevents counties from reassessing property values when heirs clear their property titles, or resolve disputes about the ownership. The act allows families with heirsโ properties โ land inherited by multiple owners who are not listed on the title โ to transfer the title between family members without their real estate taxes increasing. Gullah Geechee people, the descendants of formerly enslaved west Africans who retained their culture and customs, are especially vulnerable to heirsโ property issues. They can lead to their homes being sold at annual auctions for delinquent tax payments, predatory development and interfamily fighting. Continue reading...

EU chief diplomat says: โRussia is on the back foot, militarily, economically, but also diplomaticallyโ Meanwhile, Hungaryโs Magyar hits a bit more upbeat tone in his latest post on Facebook, saying that while there are still some issues that need to be resolved, the two sides managed to agree a deal on โmany important questions.โ In a Facebook video, he takes viewers into a meeting room in Brussels from which he is working on ironing out the final details. โI will obviously not anticipate or prejudge what will be the outcome of that meeting, but a series of meetings has been taking place, as you know, between the teams on both sides to make as much progress as possible. โฆ Letโs see what comes out of it. Itโs not much more time to wait. We give it another day, and we should know more in terms of how far have we managed to get on both sides.โ Continue reading...

After visiting an island brothel in Bangladesh, the novelist was inspired to write an imagined uprising. She explores the radical fictional worlds where women have the power In the spring of 2024, I am finally able to visit Banishanta, the island in southern Bangladesh that has been haunting my dreams. When I arrive I find it is little more than a long patch of grey mud, with a string of flimsy huts lining a craggy shore. Thirteen years earlier, I was on a boat on my way to the Sundarban mangrove forest when a guide casually pointed out the island and told me it was a state-licensed brothel that had been there since the time of the British. When I went home, I didnโt want to think about Banishanta, because if I did, I would have to imagine the terrible things the women there were enduring while I lived a life of casual entitlements many thousands of miles away. Yet the women squatted in my imagination, refusing to leave. I resolved to never write about them, because it would say things about the world I didnโt want to know. It was only when I decided I could write a novel, set on a fictional island, about a rebellion of women, that I allowed them in. Continue reading...

Former general Petr Pavel says Moscowโs testing of allianceโs eastern flank should be met with firm line The Czech president, Petr Pavel, has urged Nato to โshow its teethโ in response to Russiaโs repeated testing of the allianceโs resolve on its eastern flank, suggesting a range of options including switching off its internet, cutting off its banks from global financial systems and shooting down jets that violate allied airspace. Speaking to the Guardian in Prague, Pavel called for โdecisive enough, potentially even asymmetricโ responses to counter Moscowโs provocative behaviour against the alliance or risk the Kremlin intensifying its actions. Republican critic of president faces challenge from Ed Gallrein, while Georgia and Pennsylvania hold key contests The biggest day of primaries yet arrives Tuesday, with voters in Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Alabama, Oregon and Idaho, heading to the polls to select candidates ahead of Novemberโs midterm elections. While many primaries will be resolved with little drama, some have shaped up to be among the most contentious elections of the year so far, serving as gauges of Donald Trumpโs control of Republicans, and the direction Democratic voters are looking to steer their party as they seek to retake control of Congress.
