Danish follicle rebels go head to head in competition for best short-in-the-front, long-in-the-back cut Business in the front, party in the back. A packed Danish crowd has celebrated the much-maligned but enduring mullet hairstyle, defined by very short hair at the front and longer hair at the back. Detainees say theyโre given โrottenโ water and denied meals for not signing papers in English that they donโt understand Detainees at Floridaโs notorious โAlligator Alcatrazโ immigration jail said guards were denying them food and fresh water on Thursday until they signed documents presented to them in English that they did not understand. In an audio recording of a telephone call to an immigration advocacy group heard by the Guardian, more than half a dozen detainees alleged that the water given to them over the last three days was โrottenโ and containing mosquito larvae, in an apparent attempt to pressure them to sign. Set to be this yearโs biggest blockbuster, The Odysseyโs cast has been selected to โrepresent the worldโ. Fair enough โ except that one key country seems to have gone completely unrepresented โฆ There are the American accents, gleaming body suits and a muddy Dunkirk palette. And then there is Lupita Nyongโo as Helen of Troy, a casting choice that recently drew racist attacks from the usual moaners of the internet, including Elon Musk, who complained it wasnโt authentic. Authenticity matters. Heโs just focusing entirely in the wrong place. To many Greeks, what concerns us most about the first look at Christopher Nolanโs adaptation of Homerโs Odyssey is the whereabouts of Billy Zane. Zane, like other beloved members of the Greek diaspora in Hollywood, has recently appeared on โAlternative Odysseyโ lists on the Greek side of social media, as well as over dinner table debates from Patras to Palmers Green. (Theo James, Jennifer Aniston, Hank Azaria, and Dave Bautista are among the other nominees.) Greek and Greek Cypriot media platforms are writing open letters. Itโs a symptom of feeling left out by Hollywood, again and with no explanation, from our foundational mythologies and epics, with a cast list that features not even a token โopoulos, โedes, or โiannou. Not a single Greek. Continue reading...

Robert Garcia became the lead contender in Tuesdayโs primaries for congressional district 42 after redistricting The conservative California community of Huntington Beach, known for banning the Pride flag from city property and fighting the state over pandemic and housing policy, could soon be represented by a gay, Democratic congressman. Robert Garcia, an incumbent two-term Democratic LGBTQ+ congressman, immigrant and Donald Trump critic, is considered the leading contender in Tuesdayโs primary race for the US House seat. Thanks to a successful restricting effort that redrew Californiaโs voting maps to favor Democrats, Huntington Beach is now part of Garciaโs congressional district 42. Continue reading...
Miami-Dade county officials agreed to pay HRP Group more than double the price for land on Fisher Island to protect fuel depot used by the cruise industry A three-way tug-of-war erupted in recent months over ownership of a property on Fisher Island โ one of the wealthiest zip codes in the United States โ that sits in Biscayne Bay opposite the skyline of downtown Miami. When TransMontaigne Partners, a Denver-based global energy company, put the parcel on the market in May 2024, interest ran high because that land represented the last remaining piece of real estate available for development on the island. The eventual winner of the bidding war was a Chicago-based developer called the HRP Group, which purchased the property for $180m in late September last year. The developer then announced ambitious plans to build condominium towers on the property at an estimated cost of $2bn. Continue reading...
Andy Burnham and the Reform candidate lead the polls, but issues such as flooding and the state of the high street are main concerns locally The roads that connect the collection of towns and villages that make up this constituency in England are studded with turquoise banners declaring: โMakerfield needs Reform.โ Once at the heart of Wiganโs coal-mining industry, and represented by a Labour MP continuously since the 1900s, Farageโs party has gained a foothold here, and with any other Labour candidate installed, this parliamentary seat would almost certainly fall to Reform. Results presented at oncology conference in Chicago show Galleri test failed to reduce late-stage cancer diagnoses A blood test for more than 50 types of cancer that was billed as the holy grail of oncology has failed to achieve its main objective in a major clinical trial, according to data presented at the worldโs largest cancer conference. The goal of the study involving 142,000 NHS patients in the UK was to assess whether adding the multi-cancer early detection test Galleri to standard screening could shift diagnoses to earlier, more treatable stages. The GOP-friendly map approved by state lawmakers now goes to Republican governor who is expected to sign it Sign up for the Breaking News US newsletter email Louisiana Republicans approved a new congressional map on Friday which would eliminate a majority-Black congressional district that was at the center of a landmark supreme court ruling gutting section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The new map reconfigures the stateโs sixth congressional district, now represented by Cleo Fields, a Black Democrat. Lawmakers drew the district in 2024 after a court found the map lawmakers enacted after the 2020 census diluted the influence of Black voters and violated section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The new map will probably give Republicans control of five of Louisianaโs six congressional seats (the previous map had a 4-2 Republican-Democrat split). The bill now goes to Louisianaโs Republican governor, Jeff Landry, who is expected to sign it. Continue reading...

(MPL/Capitol) From nostalgic returns to his Liverpool childhood to a crazed Glastonbury fantasia, these are songs written with real purpose and a masterโs finesse The rock legend in the autumn of their years who chooses to release a new album is well advised to get themselves an angle. If the music that made you legendary was written and recorded long ago โ and is highly unlikely to be displaced in the publicโs affections by anything you do now โ itโs good to have something that suggests a sense of purpose, beyond just adding to an already vast back catalogue for the sake of it. Weโve recently seen it with Bob Dylanโs Rough and Rowdy Ways, rooted in its jawdropping 17-minute survey of American political history, Murder Most Foul; and with Bruce Springsteenโs Only the Strong Survive, with its canny covers of soul and R&B classics. And an angle is clearly something that has occurred to Paul McCartney, too. From its title referencing a road in the suburb of Liverpool where McCartney spent his early childhood, to the circumstances of its launch โ the first single Days We Left Behind was premiered not on YouTube or Spotify but BBC Radio Merseyside โ his 27th studio album has been presented as a nostalgic look back at what you might call his pre-Fab years. Charter to be adopted along riverโs entire catchment from Cambrian mountains to Chepstow and Bristol Channel The entire catchment of the River Wye has been formally recognised as a living ecosystem with intrinsic rights in a charter, a UK first that campaigners hope will help save the highly polluted river. The charter was celebrated at a community event at the Hay-on-Wye literary festival on Sunday. It includes the right to flow, to biodiversity, to be free from pollution, to be supported by a healthy catchment, to regenerate, and the right to be represented, described as a โsignificant stepโ towards protecting and restoring one of the UKโs most beloved rivers.
