The graphic novelist had a remarkable gift for visual storytelling, in the phenomenon that was Persepolis and beyond. Many of us owe our careers to the space she created, says Iranian cartoonist Mana Neyestani โข News: Marjane Satrapi, creator of Persepolis and acclaimed French-Iranian artist, dies aged 56 On the morning of 4 June, when I heard the news of Marjane Satrapiโs death, I was stunned. I simply could not believe it. Our collaboration on that book took place mostly through email correspondence, but I always held her in the highest regard. I admired her intelligence, her extraordinary sense of humour and, above all, her remarkable gift for visual storytelling. Continue reading...

In Monaโs new permanent installation, visitors can breathe air so pure it โhas not been touched by any being before youโ More than 2bn years ago, during the Paleoproterozoic era, the Earthโs atmosphere began to fill with free oxygen, enabling the rise of aerobic life and, ultimately, humans. Itโs known as the Great Oxidation Event, and deep in the subterranean belly of the Museum of Old and New Art (Mona) in Tasmania, a new artwork offers visitors the chance to inhale oxygen thatโs been trapped in iron ore since then. When French-Swiss conceptual artist Julian Charriรจre came up with the idea, Monaโs owner David Walsh not only said yes but created a bespoke space for it. Continue reading...

โIn a really simple way, this photo captures that intense colour and joy of being at the seaside with your loved onesโ Our British seaside has such a distinctive look; the bingo halls, the buckets and spades and pinwheels, and all the amazing colours of the funfairs. I find them the most amazing environments. I love that visually super-charged, maximalist style. The seaside is nostalgic to all of us. My grandpa lived in Pembrokeshire and weโd go and see him when I was little. The beach provokes this childlike sense of wonderment. There are not really any rules, and itโs playful โ the funfairs, the arcades, splashing in the water. We donโt have many outlets for play, especially as adults. Continue reading...
