Scientific dating proves streaks on walls of Bacon Hole, near the Mumbles in south Wales, is Palaeolithic rock art In 1912, the Guardian reported on the discovery of Palaeolithic rock art on the walls of Bacon Hole, a cave near the Mumbles in south Wales โ only for the painted panelโs authenticity to be dismissed by 1928. A series of horizontal bands in red pigment were subsequently deemed no more than a natural phenomenon and the newspaper added an updated statement: โIt was later established that the red streaks โฆ turned out to be red oxide mineral seeping through the rock and not prehistoric art.โ Continue reading...

Victor who secured Republican nomination for Senate seat praises president after defeating incumbent Cornyn Sign up to the Breaking News US email Hello and welcome to the US politics live blog. Texas attorney-general Ken Paxton said Donald Trumpโs endorsement is โthe most powerful force in politicsโ as he comfortably won the Republican nomination for the Senate last night. Christian Menefee defeated Al Green to represent Texasโs newly redrawn 18th congressional district. Green, 78, had served 11 terms as a Democrat, earning a reputation as one of Donald Trumpโs top critics, when he became the first member of Congress to call for his impeachment, as early as 2017. Menefee, 38, began serving in Congress earlier this year after he won a special election. The two Democrats faced off against each other in this yearโs election after Republican redistricting saw their home districts near Houston redrawn. Two Republican-led efforts to redraw congressional maps in Alabama and South Carolina hit setbacks. In Alabama, a federal court said the proposed map could not be used because it was drawn to intentionally discriminate against Black voters. The South Carolina Senate voted against redrawing the stateโs congressional map due to political and administrative reasons. Construction is under way on the White House lawn for a UFC arena that will host a cage-match next month to mark the United Statesโs 250th anniversary and Donald Trumpโs 80th birthday. The mixed martial arts fight is planned for 14 June. Donald Trump completed his annual physical after year of public attention to health issues. Trump, the oldest inaugurated president in US history, completed a physical exam on Tuesday at Walter Reed national military medical center, amid questions around his health. โEverything checked out PERFECTLY,โ the US president declared in a social media post. The Trump administration considered asking federal workers to sign NDAs. The goal of asking federal employees to sign nondisclosure agreements is to prevent them from sharing confidential information with journalists. Continue reading...

This vivid story of a Caribbean childhood in 1960s Bradford does not stint on accounts of poverty and systemic abuse, yet is pungent with wit and colour โI remember growing up and smelling lanolin everywhere and the wisps of wool just floating around,โ debut novelist Marcia Hutchinson has said of her home city of Bradford, then a traditional Yorkshire mill town, where she was born to Jamaican parents in late 1962. From 1948, Bradford became a destination for several thousand Windrush migrants from the Caribbean, encouraged to come to the UK as part of postwar reconstruction. What they found was frequent racism and hostility as well as cold, damp weather and inadequate housing. Hutchinson has been open about using her own difficult childhood as the inspiration for The Mercy Step, a novel that does not stint on accounts of poverty, systemic abuse and violence, yet is pungent with wit and colour. For sheer vivacity and determination, it deserves its place on the shortlist of this yearโs Womenโs prize for fiction. Hutchinsonโs alter ego, Mercy Hanson, makes her stubborn, lively presence known โduring the coldest winter of the 20th centuryโ, speaking to us directly from her motherโs womb. โMummyโ is a God-fearing and often terrifyingly God-invoking character, โfive foot nothingโ with a tiny waist despite her many pregnancies. Four older children have been left โBack Homeโ, some adopted by other families. Mercy is the third girl to be born to Mummy and Daddy in England; another daughter and a longed for, spoiled only son soon follow. Continue reading...

The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) on Monday issued a notice suspending Dr Sharmila Chandran as a responsible person of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, which is a registered charity, until 20 September. SafeWork NSW advised that Chandranโs alleged failure to comply with a directive not to contact RACP staff was exposing them to โimmediate and serious risksโ to their psychological health and safety, the ACNC said in a public statement. The intervention follows months of conflict within the RACPโs board, which culminated in an extraordinary general meeting last month to which police were called. Continue reading...
