Appearing before the House oversight and reform committee, which is investigating the late financier and convicted sex offender, Bondi also said she was โnot certain of the extentโ that Trump knew about the crimes of Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, the longtime associate of Epstein who is serving a 20-year sentence for sex-trafficking crimes, before they became public. Trump, still negotiating to conclude the war, claims itโs already over. Some Republican lawmakers have had enough Donald Trump has two things to say about his war with Iran. The first is that itโs already over. And second, a symbolic congressional vote to end it โ carried by four members of his own party โ is a stab in the back that could derail the peace talks heโs conducting for the war thatโs already over. By a 215-208 margin on Wednesday, the US House of Representatives voted to direct the president to withdraw US forces from hostilities with Iran, the first time either chamber has passed such a measure in the little over three months since Operation Epic Fury began on 28 February. By Thursday morning, Trump was on Truth Social calling the vote โunpatrioticโ and blaming it on โTrump Derangement Syndromeโ. Continue reading...

Revealed: AIEF, a charitable affiliate of pro-Israel lobby Aipac, has spent millions on travel for lawmakers from both parties, even as votersโ support for Israel plummets Dozens of members of Congress and Capitol Hill staffers have enjoyed lavish gifted travel to Israel funded by an Aipac affiliate since 7 October 2023, amid Israelโs expanding wars on its neighbors and despite plummeting levels of support among Americans for the countryโs policies, a Guardian analysis has found. Congressional ethics filings and other public records show the trips, led by the American Israel Education Foundation (AIEF), revolved around one-sided briefings on Middle East politics and Israeli domestic and foreign policy. Lawmakers and their staffers from both parties met Israeli officials, military contractors and civil society figures, including Benjamin Netanyahu and advocates for the annexation of the West Bank and the displacement of Palestinians from Jerusalem. The GOP-friendly map approved by state lawmakers now goes to Republican governor who is expected to sign it Sign up for the Breaking News US newsletter email Louisiana Republicans approved a new congressional map on Friday which would eliminate a majority-Black congressional district that was at the center of a landmark supreme court ruling gutting section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The new map reconfigures the stateโs sixth congressional district, now represented by Cleo Fields, a Black Democrat. Lawmakers drew the district in 2024 after a court found the map lawmakers enacted after the 2020 census diluted the influence of Black voters and violated section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The new map will probably give Republicans control of five of Louisianaโs six congressional seats (the previous map had a 4-2 Republican-Democrat split). The bill now goes to Louisianaโs Republican governor, Jeff Landry, who is expected to sign it. Continue reading...

At least six of the nine featured musical acts recruited to play on the National Mall in Washington DC this summer, in a concert series planned by the Trump administration to mark the nationโs 250th anniversary, have dropped out of the concert series, just one day after the lineup was announced. US vice-president JD Vance on Thursday told reporters that Washington was โnot there yetโ with Iran but he said the parties were close, adding that the US was in a position where it could substantially set back Tehranโs nuclear program. Earlier, Iranโs Tasnim news agency, citing a source close to the negotiating team, said the text of a potential memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two countries had not yet been finalised or confirmed.
