A laboured attempt to resurrect toy IP very few people still care about is a $200m-budgeted waste of everyoneโs time Itโs not just that He-Man himself is from the 80s that gives 2026โs Masters of the Universe such an aggressive throwback vibe. Itโs that trying to assemble a film around the haphazard mythology of a toy and dusting off IP that precious few still care about feels like something Hollywood has slowly been doing a bit less of, especially on a scale such as this. This year, hits have relied on either properties that audiences do have passion for (Scream, Michael Jackson, Mario, The Devil Wears Prada) or, radically, original ideas (Obsession, Backrooms, Goat, Hoppers). We havenโt endured an Underworld sequel or a Tarzan reboot since 2016, a Terminator film since 2019, a Dolittle reboot since 2020 or a GI Joe spin-off since 2021. Mattel might then have struck gold with Greta Gerwigโs Barbie in 2023, but that was both an unconventional, auteur-led one-off and based on a product millions were still buying on the regular (the year before release, the brand made more than $1.4bn). Various directors, from John Woo to Jon M Chu, have been loosely attached to a He-Man movie over the years and various studios, from Sony to Netflix, have tried (the latter streamer having spent a reported $30m on a failed attempt) but, as with many long-gestating projects in Hollywood, those involved forgot to remember Jeff Goldblumโs evergreen Jurassic Park line: โSo preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didnโt stop to think if they should.โ Continue reading...

Based on a 1993 best-selling memoir by Susanna Kaysen, the slim volume chronicles the authorโs approximately two-year stay inside a psychiatric facility in the late 1960s. After a decade of effort, the bookโs adaptation is finally premiering off Broadway at New Yorkโs Public Theater with a cast that includes Juliana Canfield, the Tony-nominated Stereophonic actress, as Susanna and the pop star King Princess, in her stage debut, as Lisa. Though the theatrical interpretation pulls solely from the memoir, James Mangoldโs 1999 film adaptation, starring Winona Ryder as Susanna and Angelina Jolie in an Oscar-winning performance as Lisa, will probably loom large in the audienceโs minds, as it did for the cast. Many people despair at the quality of governance in Britain at the moment, but in one respect we are living through a golden age; if you are interested in contemporary history, and learning about what actually happens at the heart of government, then you can now โ sometimes โ access the sort of information never available before. Today the government is publishing a mass of information โ apparently running to three volumes, and more than 1,000 pages โ containing the private messages Peter Mandelson exchanged with government ministers and officials when he was ambassador to the US, and before his appointment. Last month a minister compared this to the evidence released as part of the Chilcot inquiry into the Iraq war. But the Chilcot inquiry took place in the era before WhatsApp, and it was publishing secret memos โ intended for circulation within Whitehall. WhatsApp messages are a lot more personal; reading them is like being able to eavesdrop on a private conversation. Mandelson is a man with spiky, controversial views, who loves gossip and plotting, and whose private views donโt always accord with what he has said in public. It should be fascinating. I think the level of transparency is going to be unprecedented. The volume of information thatโs going to be put out is unprecedented. Itโs right we do that.
