Allegra Spender and Zali Steggall said to be exploring ways independents can work more closely together. Follow todayโs news live Treatment of Australians by Israeli forces and minister โdisgracefulโ: Butler The health minister, Mark Butler, says the government has raised โin the strongest possible wayโ its concerns with the Israeli government over the treatment of Australian and international activists detained by Israel after their flotilla was intercepted in international waters. We have [raised these issues] in the strongest possible terms, both in Israel itself, but also with the Israeli ambassador to Australia here in Canberra. The treatment of those Australians and people from many other countries as well has been disgraceful, particularly the behaviour of Minister Ben Gvir. Weโve raised our concerns in the strongest possible way. Weโre really glad that the Australians are starting now to return home and reunite with their families, but this has been a particularly concerning event. Theyโve [teal independents] obviously made inroads in particular communities in Australia. Theyโll make their own assessment about whether that works for them. There obviously is a lot of flux in the non-Labor parts of politics right now, so to see speculation like thatโs perhaps not a surprise. Continue reading...
After visiting an island brothel in Bangladesh, the novelist was inspired to write an imagined uprising. She explores the radical fictional worlds where women have the power In the spring of 2024, I am finally able to visit Banishanta, the island in southern Bangladesh that has been haunting my dreams. When I arrive I find it is little more than a long patch of grey mud, with a string of flimsy huts lining a craggy shore. Thirteen years earlier, I was on a boat on my way to the Sundarban mangrove forest when a guide casually pointed out the island and told me it was a state-licensed brothel that had been there since the time of the British. When I went home, I didnโt want to think about Banishanta, because if I did, I would have to imagine the terrible things the women there were enduring while I lived a life of casual entitlements many thousands of miles away. Yet the women squatted in my imagination, refusing to leave. I resolved to never write about them, because it would say things about the world I didnโt want to know. It was only when I decided I could write a novel, set on a fictional island, about a rebellion of women, that I allowed them in. Continue reading...
This weirdly endearing show is a total mash-up of genres โ espionage drama, buddy caper, retro movie. But that makes it a unique watch, with cracking chemistry and a lot of laughs I donโt know what it is, but I like it. That, I think, is the fairest summary I can give to Ponies, the weirdly joyful and bizarrely endearing espionage thriller cum female buddy caper set in 1970s Moscow โ filmed like a 70s movie (wipe screen! Split screen! Yellow typing across screen!), written with a modern feminist sensibility, and split over eight parts for TV. Fans of John le Carrรฉ should be warned that this new series, from Susanna Fogel (who also directs four episodes) and David Iserson, has none of the revelling in depictions of tradecraft that stories in his tradition usually prize. The setup is almost embarrassingly absurd and dealt with as swiftly as possible โ nothing to see here, just accept it and move on to the good stuff! โ as the wives of two dead CIA agents persuade their husbandsโ boss to take them on as spies, on the grounds that the KGB will never suspect that women have been recruited. It is my understanding that the real KGB were many things, but not as thick as mince, so I am glad our widows are fictitious. Continue reading...
