The singer knows all the words to Grease and channels Kenny Rogers at karaoke. But which classic musician does he liken to Picasso? The first song I fell in love with When I saw Night Boat to Cairo by Madness on Top of the Pops as an 11-year-old, something happened to me on a molecular level. There was something about the way they moved. The first single I bought I Donโt Like Mondays by the Boomtown Rats, from Swales Music in Haverfordwest, a 15-mile bus trip from the little fishing village in west Wales I lived in when I was eight. Marnie Lovejoy hopes to inspire other women to fish, protect Englandโs rivers and lift up the โbeautifulโ grayling With its iridescent pink scales and elegant dorsal fin, the grayling is known to anglers as the โlady of the streamโ, yet the society fighting for its protection has never been led by a woman, until now. Angling, and fly-fishing in particular, has always been a very male-dominated sport. The fly-fisherโs club in Mayfair, London, where anglers meet to lunch on dover sole and drink fine wine, did not allow women to cross the threshold even as guests until 2024. Continue reading...

Request for evidence to support claims of reputational and financial harm from Panorama documentary dismissed as โfishing expeditionโ Donald Trumpโs legal team has rejected a request by the BBC to hand over financial information as part of his $10bn defamation case against the broadcaster. One person was rescued by a local boat and there is an ongoing operation on Carlingford Lough to recover the second person.
Javier Bardem and his co-star are brilliant as the duelling pair at the heart of a dread-packed psychological drama โ where evil lurks in plain sight The 1991 revenge thriller Cape Fear boasts many famous moments. A teddy bear rigged with fishing wire. A drowning man speaking in tongues. But the image I cannot shake is the back of a sailboat, piloted by a lawyer who is being hounded by Max Cady, a rapist he once sent to jail. The boat is called Moana. It makes sense โ throughout Polynesia, moana means โoceanโ. However, watching now, I canโt help but wonder if the Rock is going to appear and save the day with his magical pec tattoo. Martin Scorseseโs classic was a remake of a 1962 film, which was based on a 1957 novel. Recycling IP can feel depressing, but Cape Fear always stirs the pot. The 60s film, starring Gregory Peck as a morally upright man tormented by a senselessly evil one, had a Book of Job mystery to it. Scorseseโs version introduced sympathy for the devil, and a jaundiced view of its protagonist: a lawyer who buries evidence that might exonerate his client, whom he believes should go to jail. The high-water mark, though, is probably Cape Feare, the Simpsons parody featuring Sideshow Bob. (Best. Episode. Ever.) Continue reading...
โI left Venezuela after someone held a gun to my head. But I returned to show what beauty it has โ like these two boys coming back from a fishing trip at an amazing beachโ My parents encouraged me to leave Venezuela. The situation in the country at that time, the mid-2010s, had started to get really hard, with food and medicine shortages โ and violent robberies were becoming a regular thing. A lot of people had started to leave and my parents were worried that if I stayed something bad would happen. I had already seen my mum robbed and Iโd had a gun held to my head, but that was normal. I was lucky enough to be able to go to England. But when I arrived, to study at Huddersfield University, I had the feeling many immigrants have โ of not belonging, questioning who I was and where I was from. I understood what I was losing, too, and it hurt. I remain deeply connected to Venezuela and whenever I go back to visit my parents we always go to the beach. My whole family loves the ocean: itโs how I spent a lot of my childhood. I started shooting there, too, hanging out with kids, spending time with young people and seeing what they were going through, but I also felt I could give something back. The kids had so much fun during those shoots. Continue reading...

Twelve dead as southern and central areas also suffer travel disruption, electricity outages and evacuations Heavy, prolonged rainfall in southern and central China has resulted in weather warnings for flash flooding, landslides and waterlogging. The slow-moving band of rainfall spanned 620 miles (1,000km) and travelled eastwards across the regions on Tuesday. It was formed from the convergence of multiple bands of rain originating from the Bay of Bengal, South China Sea and Pacific Ocean. Given the accompanying low wind speeds, high daily and hourly rainfall totals have been recorded, with as much as 75mm locally in Hunan, 85mm in Anhui in a 24-hour period, and 95mm on the island of Hainan. Twelve people have died because of the flooding and hundreds of residents have been evacuated by emergency services. There were major travel disruptions, electricity outages, as well as school and business closures. Social media posts showed submerged cars and people fishing along flooded streets. Initial testing found evidence of metals in water samples, months after provinceโs residents began reporting unusual numbers of dead fish washing ashore Papua New Guineaโs government has warned communities not to fish from parts of the New Ireland coastline as preliminary tests show evidence of metals in some water samples, after months of residents reporting dead marine life in the area. On 7 May the fisheries minister, Jelta Wong, said initial testing conducted by an independent company detected various metals in water samples taken from affected areas around Kafkaf village and Larairu lagoon in New Ireland, an island in eastern PNG.
