Most of us have people in the office that we just don't click with. But have you ever considered that your irritating co-worker could be something more sinister - a narcissist?
The Chief Secretary to the Treasury tried to intervene as a powerful Commons committee considered the proposals.
Heโs pink, dotty and as British as a Boots meal deal. In recent months heโs duetted with pop stars, appeared on Saturday Night Live and been declared the UKโs equivalent of Mickey Mouse. Whatโs behind this strange comeback? Margaret Thatcher wasnโt to blame for the closure of Britainโs coalmines. Mr Blobby was. A harrowing spoof documentary exposed this horrific truth during the finale of Saturday Night Live UKโs debut season. Back in 1992, drilling activity at Nottinghamshireโs Grimethorpe Colliery awoke an evil entity buried underground. Mr Blobby promptly went on an unstoppable murderous rampage, ripping off minersโ limbs and becoming โan atom bomb made fleshโ. Mr Blobby being disinterred is an apt metaphor. Recent months have seen the pink-and-yellow agent of chaos unearthed and on the comeback trail. He has appeared on primetime TV shows, duetted with popstars, and convinced nostalgic punters to part with a surprising amount of cash to get their hands on Blobby-themed merchandise. What has prompted the comeback of a character once considered irredeemably naff? Continue reading...
Politicians on the right have politicised Novakโs death and suggested there is a โtwo-tierโ policing system that victimises white people Good morning. The most interesting event of the day may well turn out to be one taking place late tonight, when Andy Burnham, the Labour candidate for Makerfield and potential next PM, takes part in a BBC byelection Question Time special. Yesterday, Burnham said that at some point today he would give a more considered response to the Henry Nowak murder, and the issues it has raised about policing and race equality. It is not clear yet whether we will get that response on QT, or before. But this morning the government seems to be firming up its opposition to those claiming that what happened to Nowak was evidence of โtwo-tier justiceโ. Reform UK is the main party using this phrase, but some Tories have made the same argument. Yesterday, Keir Starmer said he did not accept that Britain has two-tier policing. This morning Lucy Rigby, the chief secretary to the Treasury, has been doing an interview round, and she told Sky News this allegation was a โslurโ on the police. Asked about the claim, she said: Fundamentally, I think that is a slur on the thousands of police officers that go out to work every day, putting themselves in harmโs way to serve the public, to try and prevent crime, and to keep us all safe. The suggestion that we have two-tier policing, which suggests at its heart that the police are on a sort of systemic basis pushing the interests of one group above another โ I genuinely think is a slur on all those police officers that are serving this country day and night, seven days a week. Robert Garcia became the lead contender in Tuesdayโs primaries for congressional district 42 after redistricting The conservative California community of Huntington Beach, known for banning the Pride flag from city property and fighting the state over pandemic and housing policy, could soon be represented by a gay, Democratic congressman. Robert Garcia, an incumbent two-term Democratic LGBTQ+ congressman, immigrant and Donald Trump critic, is considered the leading contender in Tuesdayโs primary race for the US House seat. Thanks to a successful restricting effort that redrew Californiaโs voting maps to favor Democrats, Huntington Beach is now part of Garciaโs congressional district 42. Continue reading...

Texas attorney-general Ken Paxton said Donald Trumpโs endorsement is โthe most powerful force in politicsโ as he comfortably won the Republican nomination for the Senate last night. Christian Menefee defeated Al Green to represent Texasโs newly redrawn 18th congressional district. Green, 78, had served 11 terms as a Democrat, earning a reputation as one of Donald Trumpโs top critics, when he became the first member of Congress to call for his impeachment, as early as 2017. Menefee, 38, began serving in Congress earlier this year after he won a special election. The two Democrats faced off against each other in this yearโs election after Republican redistricting saw their home districts near Houston redrawn. Two Republican-led efforts to redraw congressional maps in Alabama and South Carolina hit setbacks. In Alabama, a federal court said the proposed map could not be used because it was drawn to intentionally discriminate against Black voters. The South Carolina Senate voted against redrawing the stateโs congressional map due to political and administrative reasons.
