Behind closed doors, leaders of a growing separatist movement in the oil-rich conservative heartland are quietly holding talks with White House officials.
Former figures at regulator voice disquiet after series of provocative interviews by recently departed chair Regulators are not generally known for courting controversy. When the day job involves making delicate, legally fraught decisions, they tend to be a circumspect bunch. However, since stepping down as chair of Ofcom, one of Britainโs most scrutinised watchdogs, the Conservative peer Michael Grade has been doing his best to buck that stereotype. โIโm free of the shackles,โ he recently said. Experts warn primary vote-counting could go on for days in governorโs race, LA mayoral race and congressional races Three days after Californians headed to the polls, key races in the primary election remained too close to call and experts warned the counting could continue for days. In the governorโs race, the British-born conservative pundit Steve Hilton was narrowly leading with an estimated 60% of ballots counted by Friday morning. Xavier Becerra, a former US health and human services secretary under Joe Biden, followed closely behind, and billionaire Tom Steyer trailed behind the pair. The top two vote-getters will advance to the general election in November. Continue reading...
Republican states rebrand June as โnuclear family monthโ or โfidelity monthโ in latest attack on LGBTQ+ communities June is widely marked as gay Pride month โ when LGBTQ+ communities march to protest discrimination and celebrate their identities in the month that the modern US gay liberation movement was born out of the 1969 uprising at New Yorkโs Stonewall Inn โ although not so much in certain Republican-led states this year. Some Republican governors have suddenly come up with alternative labels for the month, which both supporters and opponents view as counterprogramming. Continue reading...
In an interview for a BBC Radio 4 documentary, England's Identity Crisis, the Conservative leader warned of rising tensions as groups on the left and the right.
Peter Kyle says British politics fails to reward political accomplishment and Labour risks aping Tory instability The Labour party has not learned the right lessons from the Conservatives about changing leader, a senior cabinet minister has warned, saying in a swipe at potential challengers that โentitlement is not a qualificationโ. Peter Kyle, the business secretary, said he was worried that British politics โrewards the wrong behaviourโ and there was little credit for the work of his own department, including negotiating trade deals, rescue packages for companies and preserving British industry. State election officials continue to sift through uncounted primary ballots, which could take days or even weeks The California governorโs race remained unsettled Thursday, as state election officials continued to sift through uncounted primary ballots โ a process that could take days or even weeks as voters eagerly await the results. Polls indicated that British-born conservative pundit Steve Hilton was narrowly leading the race, followed by former US human services and health secretary Xavier Becerra. Billionaire Tom Steyer trailed behind the pair. Under Californiaโs primary system, the top two vote-getters will advance to the general election. Continue reading...
The Tory chairman sent out a new warning to Conservative-run councils yesterday, ordering them not to fly the modern, ultra-progressive, Pride flag.
Badenoch differentiated herself from Nigel Farage in response to Henry Nowakโs murder and supporters say her ratings are rising Kemi Badenoch has a hard-earned reputation for combativeness, especially on culture war issues, but at prime ministerโs questions, with the murder of the teenager Henry Nowak in the headlines, Keir Starmer ended up thanking the Conservative leader for her โtoneโ. So is she a changed politician? Well, not exactly. To an extent, Badenochโs approach ahead of her weekly Commons showdown with Starmer was shaped by events. Widespread concern on Wednesday at the police response to Nowakโs murder โ the student was handcuffed while he bled to death after being falsely accused of racism โ spiralled into rioting on Tuesday night. The imperative not to inflame matters further was obvious. Continue reading...
The narrow win on Tuesday exposed potential vulnerabilities within Trump's coalition in the deeply conservative state, offering encouragement to Democrats who are optimistic about their chances of flipping the governor's office this year
Sarah Jones appeals for calm after rioting over the death of Nowak, who was handcuffed while dying from stab wound Last night Abimbola Johnson, a barrister who chairs the independent scrutiny and oversight board for the police Race Action Plan, told Radio 4โs the World Tonight that he thought Chris Philpโs criticism of the police anti-racism commitment (see 8.19am) was โdisingenuousโ. He claimed that when Philp was policing minister The chair of the oversight board that scrutinised the Police Race Action Plan has said Chris Philpโs criticism of the policeโs policy is โdisingenuousโ and that he never raised concerns with the plan when he was policing minister from 2022 to 2024. Johnson said: For [Philp] to take umbrage at the idea that there is a commitment to reduce disparities in arrest rates and use of force is disingenuous. And I would also highlight that when the Conservative government were in power and Chris Philp was the policing minister, not once did he meet with the Race Action Plan, not once did he bring any legitimate concerns that he may have had around that and involve himself in any constructive conversations about it. Bank of England says updated imagery will celebrate native wildlife while bolstering anti-counterfeit features Puffins, dolphins and bumblebees are among the wildlife that could feature on new banknotes in the UK as the Bank of England announces its shortlist. There has been controversy over the decision, with figures including Nigel Farage criticising the Bank for, he claimed, wanting to replace Winston Churchill with a beaver. The Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch, said it was โa silly thing to doโ, and Reform UKโs Farage called it โabsolutely crackersโ. In the end, no beaver appeared on the shortlist. Mammal options include bottlenose dolphins and red foxes. Continue reading...
The conservative activist's death sparked an uproar across the country, with one group mourning him, and another rejoicing over his passing on September 10, 2025
Professor Sir John Curtice said his latest analysis was that the insurgent party's supporters are a 'coalition' of people with 'distinct socially conservative views' .
A former youth leader in the far-right Conservative Party, which opposed the end of apartheid, Du Venage, 56, claims he grew up fearing the consequences for white South Africans if they lost control of the country
Watchable biopic charts how an 18-year-old German booked the sickly American pianist Keith Jarrett for what became a landmark concert Here is a niche drama about one of the most important chapters in the history of experimental jazz. It is however watchable, well acted and avoids the music-movie cliches โ though I could have done without the fourth-wall-breaking lectures about the nature of jazz improvisation. They were perhaps inspired by similar setpieces in Adam McKayโs financial crisis movie The Big Short, and are heavy-handed and condescending in just the same way. John Magaro plays Keith Jarrett, the great jazz pianist and former Miles Davis collaborator who in the mid-70s found himself on a gruelling European solo tour, improvising every night for the ecstatic jazz faithful who were more plentiful in Europe than the US, while struggling with depression and back pain. Mala Emde plays the amazingly precocious 18-year-old Vera Brandes, a kid from Cologne who had become a jazz promoter after being inspired by an encounter with Ronnie Scott, and rebelling against her grumpily conservative dentist father, played here by Ulrich Tukur. Professor Sir John Curtice said his latest analysis was that the insurgent party's supporters are a 'coalition' of people with 'distinct socially Conservative views'.
Party could struggle to push ratings as strategy increasingly focuses on views held by minority of voters, research finds Reform UK is becoming increasingly reliant on socially conservative views for political support, and therefore could struggle to push its poll ratings much higher, a large-scale research project led by the leading psephologist John Curtice has found. A study of Nigel Farageโs party carried out as part of the British Social Attitudes report found that while Reform supporters were disproportionately more likely to be unhappy with politicians and public services, recent recruits had seemingly more robust attitudes in areas such as diversity and welfare. Robert Garcia became the lead contender in Tuesdayโs primaries for congressional district 42 after redistricting The conservative California community of Huntington Beach, known for banning the Pride flag from city property and fighting the state over pandemic and housing policy, could soon be represented by a gay, Democratic congressman. Robert Garcia, an incumbent two-term Democratic LGBTQ+ congressman, immigrant and Donald Trump critic, is considered the leading contender in Tuesdayโs primary race for the US House seat. Thanks to a successful restricting effort that redrew Californiaโs voting maps to favor Democrats, Huntington Beach is now part of Garciaโs congressional district 42. Continue reading...
