Experts say dismantling the ocean observation system will โseverely degradeโ the accuracy of weather predictions The Trump administrationโs plan to dismantle an ocean observation system vital to understanding the climate crisis and marine ecosystems would โseverely degradeโ the accuracy of weather predictions and El Niรฑo forecasts, with economic consequences for the US, European and American scientists have warned. Decommissioning the US system, which plays a major part in a global ocean observation network, would lead to a massive increase in error in the annual estimates of ocean heating rates, according to research published last month. Four-part TV documentary examines the aftermath of Operation Peyzac, where officers posed as music industry figures to gather intelligence on crime It was the undercover police operation that led to 37 people being jailed for more than 400 years in total after officers set up a fake recording studio and record shop on a north London housing estate. Now, a four-part television documentary has brought Operation Peyzac back under the spotlight, prompting renewed scrutiny of the tactics used by undercover officers and calls for the operation to be examined by the UKโs ongoing spycops inquiry. The violence of male entitlement is embodied in the charismatic son of a Mississippi pastor, in a sharp portrait of cruelty and inheritance โTo woman he gave a womb, and to man he gave dominionโ, thatโs what I teach my boys,โ the Rev Sabre Winfrey Jr tells his wife, Priscilla, midway through Addie E Citchensโs formidable Womenโs prize-shortlisted debut novel, Dominion. In Citchensโs hands, that dominion is exercised not only through violence, but through charisma, piety and the banality of male entitlement. Set in the fictional town of Dominion, Mississippi, at the turn of the millennium, the novel follows the Winfreys, a prominent Black church family whose putative grandeur conceals a deep and hereditary decay. Sabre leads the largest congregation in the state from the pulpit of Seven Seals Baptist church, dispensing wisdom through sermons and local radio broadcasts, exuding the oily confidence of a man convinced that God speaks exclusively in his register. The longsuffering Priscilla writes those sermons, raises their five sons and silently maintains the machinery of his authority without ever receiving credit for it. Continue reading...

Now in residence at the Madrid Prado, the author talks about its dark, inspirational Goyas, the clandestine nature of her writing โ and why she finally wrote about her jailed then posthumously exonerated father It is a bright, chilly spring morning in Madrid, and the Museo del Prado doesnโt open to the public for another hour. Without the crowds, the museum is amorphous and eerily silent. A pale light pools in the corners and casts long shadows around the paintings, as if the figures inside them have slipped quietly into the room. It is here that I meet the French-Moroccan writer Leรฏla Slimani, who has spent the past two weeks using the space as inspiration for her work. With quick strides, Slimani leads us to a basement gallery housing some of her favourite works: Francisco Goyaโs dark and haunting Black Paintings, created later in life when the Spanish artist had adopted a particularly bleak outlook on humanity. Among them are Saturn Devouring His Son, a violent depiction of the god biting into his own child; The Fates, with its three ominous figures spinning the thread of life; and Witchesโ Sabbath (The Great He-Goat), in which the devil appears as a goat presiding over a coven. Royal Shakespeare theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon Prospero is reimagined as a conductor in this superbly orchestrated version of Shakespeareโs tragicomedy Kenneth Branagh is said to have played 35 Shakespearean parts, albeit back in the day. Seeing him speaking in verse these days is something of an event, all the more so when he is making a return to the Royal Shakespeare Company after more than 30 years to take on, for the first time, Shakespeareโs magissleician, deposed duke and tyrant occupier. Even the king turned up for it some days ago. Branaghโs Prospero initially follows in the vein of his fast and feverish King Lear, performed in the West End in 2023. He seems to be speeding through the part rather than inhabiting it, too puckish, almost larky, rather underwhelming. It is the show itself that casts its spell through its enchanting sights, sounds and ensemble accomplishments. Richard Eyre, directing his first Shakespeare play at Stratford, does a stupendous job of bringing an overt sense of performance to the production. Continue reading...
Two widows of the same man remain behind in an abandoned mountain village in Rajan Kathet and Sunir Pandeyโs visually arresting documentary In the valley of Dhorpatan in western Nepal, winter arrives with unforgiving intensity. Clouds of freezing mist gradually descend, making the rocky terrain look starkly barren, a lonesome void amid vertiginous mountain ranges. At this time of the year, most of the inhabitants migrate south to warmer regions โ except for two. Unfolding at a languid pace, Rajan Kathet and Sunir Pandeyโs feature-length documentary debut casts its gaze on Ratima and Kalima, elderly caretakers tasked with watching over the abandoned village. Widows to the same man, they make for an unusual yet beguiling pair whose dynamic wavers between warmth and discord. The two womenโs different temperaments make for an engaging contrast. The older, jaded Ratima spends her days in a haze of alcohol and regrets. Meanwhile, younger Kalima has a sunnier attitude, which she extends to creatures big and small; she even has pet names for the livestock. Once the second wife and hence a romantic rival, Kalima now takes care of the ailing Ratima with sisterly tenderness. Their daily routines โ simple meals by the fire, reminiscences about their departed husband โ are juxtaposed with expansive wide shots of the desolate landscape. Continue reading...
