All the big hitters โ on the leave side, anyway โ are rolled out for Brexit: A Very British Civil War. Plus: the return of scouse comedy GโWed. Hereโs what to watch this evening 9pm, BBC Two What a decade itโs been. As the nation prepares to link hands and joyfully celebrate the 10th anniversary of the decision to leave the EU, this two-part documentary recaps the febrile weeks and months around that choice. History, it is said, is written by the winners. And so it proves here: disappointingly, this story is told overwhelmingly from the perspective of the factions making up the leave campaign, as Michael Gove, Kate Hoey, Nigel Farage, Arron Banks and Boris Johnson offer their thoughts. Meanwhile, in the remain corner, itโs basically David Cameron, George Osborne and, muttering sadly to himself, Jeremy Corbyn. Fascinating and horrifying. Phil Harrison Continue reading...

Chichester Festival theatre This stage version of Ian McEwanโs devastating class novel shows inspiring touches and the cast play adeptly, yet the taleโs emotional sweep feels underpowered Ian McEwanโs novel begins with a play. It is written by 13-year-old Briony Tallis, who has a gift for telling stories. It is perhaps appropriate that Brionyโs tale โ the one she is constructing through the course of McEwanโs novel โ has been adapted for the stage itself now, although it is a hard act to follow the magnificence of the book and also Joe Wrightโs celebrated film starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. The plot reflects on the healing power of storytelling but also its potential to cause damage and destroy. It opens in 1935 in an aristocratic English country home, when one evening, after seeing the housekeeperโs son, Robbie (Jasper Talbot), having sex with her sister, Cecilia (Miriam Petche), she wrongly accuses him of raping her 15-year-old cousin Lola (Yanexi Enriquez). Briony lives with the guilt of that lie long after Robbie has been sent to prison and then the frontline of the second world war. Continue reading...
