In her first novel for adults, the YA author explores the dark side of writers who fictionalise their childrenโs lives Childrenโs writers are sometimes cruel, and often damaged. And, as AS Byatt put it crisply when talking about her 2009 novel The Childrenโs Book: โWriting childrenโs books isnโt good for the writerโs own children.โ Think of Christopher Milne, raging at having been Christopher Robin; Vivian Burnett, dragging Little Lord Fauntleroy behind him; Alastair Grahame, lying down on train tracks. This is fertile material, as Byatt recognised, for a grown-up book. The American author Melissa Albert, herself a very successful childrenโs writer, has made it the theme of her first adult novel. The Childrenโs protagonist is Guinevere Sharpe, who as a grown woman is trapped by a very public version of her childhood. Her mother, Edith, a sort of JK Rowling/Enid Blyton composite, wrote an era-defining run of childrenโs portal fantasies called the Ninth City series, in which Guin and her older brother Ennis appeared as the named protagonists. Justices uphold FCC authority to impose in-house penalties, rejecting AT&T and Verizon jury trial claims Sign up for the Breaking News US newsletter email The US supreme court backed the Federal Communications Commissionโs system for levying fines, ruling on Thursday against wireless carriers AT&T and Verizon in their challenge to the agency and handing a win to Donald Trumpโs administration. The ruling was 8-1. At issue in the legal dispute was whether the agencyโs in-house proceedings for imposing the penalties deprived the companies of their right to a jury trial under the US constitution. The violence of male entitlement is embodied in the charismatic son of a Mississippi pastor, in a sharp portrait of cruelty and inheritance โTo woman he gave a womb, and to man he gave dominionโ, thatโs what I teach my boys,โ the Rev Sabre Winfrey Jr tells his wife, Priscilla, midway through Addie E Citchensโs formidable Womenโs prize-shortlisted debut novel, Dominion. In Citchensโs hands, that dominion is exercised not only through violence, but through charisma, piety and the banality of male entitlement. Set in the fictional town of Dominion, Mississippi, at the turn of the millennium, the novel follows the Winfreys, a prominent Black church family whose putative grandeur conceals a deep and hereditary decay. Sabre leads the largest congregation in the state from the pulpit of Seven Seals Baptist church, dispensing wisdom through sermons and local radio broadcasts, exuding the oily confidence of a man convinced that God speaks exclusively in his register. The longsuffering Priscilla writes those sermons, raises their five sons and silently maintains the machinery of his authority without ever receiving credit for it. Continue reading...
