Iran's Khamenei warns against divisions after 'enemy's defeat on battlefield'

Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said in a message on Thursday that Iran's enemies, having been ‌defeated on ⁠the battlefield, were now ‌seeking to undermine public resilience ⁠and sow internal divisions. Khamenei called for national unity in ‌the face of those threats and said any action ‌that created pessimism or frustration among the public amounted to helping the enemy.

AI feature film on Iran’s protest movement makes festival history

A film about Iran's protest movement is making cinema history. "Dreams of Violets" is the first fully AI-generated feature film ever selected by a major international film festival. The 75-minute drama will premiere at New York's Tribeca Festival next week. Created by Iranian-British director Ash Koosha from his home in London, the film took just three months to produce and cost less than 2,000 euros. There were no actors, no cameras, no sets and no film crew. Koosha says the film simply could not have been made through conventional means. Living in exile and unable to safely film inside Iran, he turned to AI to recreate events linked to the country's deadly crackdown on anti-government protesters. The film is based on journalistic reports, photographs and eyewitness accounts, and explores themes of memory, censorship and resistance. But as Tribeca becomes the first major festival to embrace a fully AI-generated feature, the film is also reigniting a fierce debate. Can artificial intelligence tell deeply human stories? Does AI democratise filmmaking or threaten the future of the industry? Eve Jackson speaks to Ash Koosha about Iran, ethics and the future of cinema.

Israel, Lebanon agree to conditional ceasefire

Israel and Lebanon agreed Wednesday to implement a ceasefire but said it would require a "complete cessation" of fire by Iran-backed Hezbollah, according to a joint statement after US-led talks in Washington. The two sides, which do not have formal diplomatic relations, also agreed to create "pilot zones" in which the Lebanese armed forces "will take exclusive control of the territory to the exclusion of all non-state actors". Middle East war live: Israel and Lebanon agree to implement a ceasefire

Israel and Lebanon agreed Wednesday to renew their fragile ceasefire and create a number of “pilot” security zones inside Lebanon from which Hezbollah militants would be banned. In a joint statement released after a fourth round of US-mediated talks at the State Department, the two sides said the ceasefire “is contingent on a complete cessation of Hezbollah fire and the evacuation of all Hezbollah operatives” from areas south of the Litani River. Russia 'bogged down' in Ukraine, suffering net territorial losses for first the time since 2023

Rejecting narratives of Russian momentum, he argues that Moscow's intensified bombardment of Kyiv reflects mounting pressure on President Vladimir Putin, whose military campaign has become increasingly "bogged down" and politically costly. While acknowledging the devastating impact on Ukrainian civilians, he contends that Russia's battlefield difficulties, growing casualties, and declining territorial gains have created pressure on the Kremlin to project power through spectacular strikes on urban centers. As Moscow faces AI-enhanced drone warfare to systematic strikes on Russian oil infrastructure and military logistics, Putin must demonstrate to his "jingoistic militaristic base" that "Russia is not impotent. Russia can strike back."

'To start somewhere else is like a rebirth': Franco-American band Fleur bleu·e

A group formed in Paris but now based in the US have told FRANCE 24 that the move has been like a rebirth for their music. Fleur bleu·e were created by a couple who lived above a bar in Paris, but swapped that life for one in a small town in the woods of Pennsylvania. They sing in both French and English as their aim is to address their music beyond France. Their new album is called "Question Marked Upon the World". Fleur bleu·e spoke to us in Perspective.
