Former French first lady dies at 93: Bernadette Chirac, a 'discreet force'

Bernadette Chirac, the steel-willed former first lady of France who spent 12 years at the Élysée Palace from 1995 to 2007 beside president Jacques Chirac while building her own political power in rural Corrèze and turning a children’s hospital charity into a national institution, has died. She was 93. Beloved by many, Bernadette was a "discreet force" and the "rock" on which her husband's political career was based on, according to Paul Smith, head of modern languages and associate professor in French at the University of Nottingham.

US envoy confirms Iranian footballers granted visas for World Cup

The Iranian team is due to fly from Turkey to Spain on Saturday before traveling on to their base camp in Mexico, which has issued visas to the squad. They were originally due to be based in the US, but switched their camp to Mexico due to the tensions between them and the US over the war in the Middle East.

Anthropic calls for pause of global AI development

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic suggested Thursday a global pause on building the most powerful AI systems as the latest models are beginning to show signs they could escape human control. The San Francisco-based company, which makes the Claude family of AI models, said in a report that a worldwide slowdown in cutting-edge AI development would "likely be a good thing" -- but warned that if only one company stopped, rivals would simply race ahead.

AI feature film on Iran’s protest movement makes festival history

A film about Iran's protest movement is making cinema history. "Dreams of Violets" is the first fully AI-generated feature film ever selected by a major international film festival. The 75-minute drama will premiere at New York's Tribeca Festival next week. Created by Iranian-British director Ash Koosha from his home in London, the film took just three months to produce and cost less than 2,000 euros. There were no actors, no cameras, no sets and no film crew. Koosha says the film simply could not have been made through conventional means. Living in exile and unable to safely film inside Iran, he turned to AI to recreate events linked to the country's deadly crackdown on anti-government protesters. The film is based on journalistic reports, photographs and eyewitness accounts, and explores themes of memory, censorship and resistance. But as Tribeca becomes the first major festival to embrace a fully AI-generated feature, the film is also reigniting a fierce debate. Can artificial intelligence tell deeply human stories? Does AI democratise filmmaking or threaten the future of the industry? Eve Jackson speaks to Ash Koosha about Iran, ethics and the future of cinema.

India: Viral 'Cockroach' party to take message to the streets

India’s Cockroach Janta Party started as an online youth movement, taking aim at the country’s government over high unemployment and inflation. But after gaining huge traction online, it is now set to take its message to the streets with a protest planned for this Saturday in New Delhi. Its leader, currently based in the US, has planned to return to India for the demonstration, even if he fears being arrested.

'Ni una menos': Mass rallies held in Argentina to protest killing of 14-year-old girl

The killing this month of 14-year-old Agostina Vega, in the central city of Cordoba, has shocked Argentina, triggering a groundswell of outrage and growing demands for government action against gender-based violence. The outrage has reverberated across the country, and on Wednesday, thousands of protesters gathered for the annual Ni Una Menos demonstration in downtown Buenos Aires. Agostina’s case brought renewed energy and purpose to the protest, amplifying demands for government action and intensifying criticism of President Javier Milei.

Models suggest amplitude of El Niño in 2026 'as high or higher than any event in last century'

Speaking with FRANCE 24's Sharon Gaffney, Paul Roundy, Professor of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences at the State University of New York at Albany, says that "the models and physical arguments based on tracking the progress of warm water suggest that the amplitude [of El Niño in 2026] could be as high or potentially higher than any event in the last century".

'To start somewhere else is like a rebirth': Franco-American band Fleur bleu·e

A group formed in Paris but now based in the US have told FRANCE 24 that the move has been like a rebirth for their music. Fleur bleu·e were created by a couple who lived above a bar in Paris, but swapped that life for one in a small town in the woods of Pennsylvania. They sing in both French and English as their aim is to address their music beyond France. Their new album is called "Question Marked Upon the World". Fleur bleu·e spoke to us in Perspective.
