In record June, another feat for MoTown

The Economic Times (India)

June may have marked a singificant trend shift for MoTown India, with sales data for the month showing a significant first for the country's carmakers, The Times of India reported on July 7.The share of alternative-fuel passenger vehicles in India's retail car market crossed the 40% mark for the first time in June, underlining a shift in consumer buying behaviour as motorists increasingly opt for vehicles with lower running costs amid a rapidly evolving fuel scene.Data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) showed compressed natural gas (CNG), hybrid and electric vehicles together accounted for 40.2% of passenger vehicle retail sales in June, compared with 33.3% in the same month last year. The share also improved from 38.02% recorded in May, pushing the combined contribution of petrol and diesel models below 60% for the first time. Also read | Mahindra bets on execution as global uncertainty becomes 'structural'CNG vehicles continued to dominate the alternative-fuel segment, contributing nearly a quarter of overall passenger vehicle retail sales.Hybrid models accounted for more than 8% of the market, while electric vehicles (EVs) contributed close to 8%, reflecting growing consumer acceptance of newer powertrain technologies across price segments. The shift came during a record month for the passenger vehicle industry.

Retail sales climbed 28.6% from a year earlier to 4,10,853 units, making it the strongest June performance on record. The growth was supported by healthy customer enquiries, improved vehicle availability and continued momentum in demand despite price revisions announced by several manufacturers at the beginning of June.132233286Demand remained stronger in rural markets than in urban centres.

Rural passenger vehicle sales expanded 35.1% year-on-year, outpacing the 24.7% growth recorded in cities. However, dealers indicated that buying activity in some agricultural regions moderated compared with the previous month as the delayed and uneven progress of the southwest monsoon prompted some prospective customers to postpone purchase decisions. Also read | India's retail car sales jump nearly 29% in JuneIndustry executives said the continued rise in alternative-fuel vehicles reflects changing ownership economics rather than a temporary trend.Rising fuel costs over the past few years, expanding availability of CNG infrastructure, wider model choices in hybrid vehicles and improving charging networks for EVs have together encouraged buyers to diversify beyond conventional petrol and diesel options.Electric passenger vehicle retail sales reached an all-time monthly high of 31,823 units during June, highlighting the segment's continued expansion despite a gradual reduction in government incentives over the past year. The growing product portfolio, including models across premium and mass-market categories, has broadened consumer interest.CNG vehicles, meanwhile, have continued to benefit from their relatively lower operating costs and increasing availability across hatchback, sedan and utility vehicle segments.Hybrid technology has also gained traction among customers seeking better fuel efficiency without concerns over charging infrastructure, ToI's report said.According to dealers, vehicle supplies improved significantly during the month after logistics disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions in West Asia eased following the ceasefire, allowing manufacturers to replenish inventories more efficiently.Stable crude oil prices and smoother supply chains also helped normalise deliveries across dealerships.FADA noted that price hikes of around 2-3% implemented by several automobile manufacturers from June 1 had little impact on booking momentum, indicating that underlying demand remained intact.June sales trends reinforced a broader transformation already visible across the industry.

As per recent ET reports, automakers have been accelerating investments in CNG, hybrid and electric technologies while expanding model line-ups to meet changing customer preferences and comply with tighter emission norms. ...
