Ruling party chair steps down ahead of convention

Rep.

Jung Chung-rae, chair of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea, has resigned from his post in apparent preparation to rerun for party chair in the August party convention.

The four-term lawmaker announced his intentions at the party's supreme council meeting Wednesday.

Some speculate that the future of South Korea's liberal bloc — which has experienced a drop in approval ratings and power struggles between factions — could hinge on the outcome of the party convention.
