RTHK News (Hong Kong)
A 57-year-old woman has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle a puppy through Lo Wu crossing on Thursday.
The dog has an estimated market value of about HK$3,000.
Customs and Excise Department officers intercepted the mainlander and found the puppy in her sling bag.
The case was handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigations.
Customs officials reminded the public that importing animals without a valid permit is an offence.
Under the Rabies Regulation, any person found guilty of illegally importing animals, carcasses or animal products is liable to a fine of up to HK$50,000 and imprisonment for one year.
