Offences committed as a result of drug addiction: statement by Palazzo Chigi

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, expresses satisfaction with the final approval of the law strengthening the concrete possibility for those convicted of offences committed as a result of drug addiction to undergo a recovery programme under house arrest at a therapeutic community instead of remaining in prison, provided that their sentence does not exceed eight years’ imprisonment.
This draft law by the Government was further developed in the Senate with the contribution of the opposition, thus including amendments they proposed. It is the result of a joint proposal by the entire addiction recovery field, starting with therapeutic communities. This proposal, of key importance and widely supported, was endorsed and put forward at the National Conference on Addiction held in Rome last November.
This is a victory on several fronts: for those who will take up this opportunity, in a way that is, on the one hand, more extensive and, on the other, more rigorous than the legislation in force until now; for everyone’s security, because each proven rehabilitation removes the trigger that pushes certain people to reoffend; for the prison population, which will be eased by individuals opting for therapeutic community programmes.
