Seize five‑year plan opportunities: industry leaders

The leaders of Hong Kong's engineering and industrial sectors have said the city should seize the opportunities arising from its first five‑year plan – and make the most of them.

During an interview with RTHK's "Vision 15: Hong Kong's Chapter", Frank Chan, President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, said the city must plan ahead in its construction process, leaving room for flexibility to adapt to future technological developments and changing needs.

"For example, autonomous driving. In the future, when the Northern Metropolis is built, will there be autonomous public transport and driver-less vehicles running smoothly throughout the area? If we don't leave room for that, our city will fall behind," he said.

Anthony Lam, Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, says businesses of all sizes need to get on board with the city's five‑year plan – because every company, big or small, has a role to play.

"Any company – whether SMEs or large enterprises – has their own one‑year, three‑year, five‑year, or even ten‑year plans. There will always be a blueprint for the future. This five‑year plan is the government's way of telling everyone what's coming, so companies can plan accordingly," he said.
