미국 중부사령부(CENTCOM)는 19일(현지 시간) 이란을 겨냥한 새로운 공습을 개시했다고 밝혔다.CENTCOM은 이날 X(옛 트위터) 성명을 통해 “오늘 미 동부시간 오후 7시(이란 시간 20일 오전 2시30분)부터 이란을 상대로 9일 연속 공습을 시작했다”고 밝혔다.이어 “이번 작전은 호르무즈 해협을 통과하는 상선과 민간 선원들을 공격하는 데 사용되는 이란의 군사 능력을 지속적으로 약화시키기 위한 것”이라고 밝혔다.이번 공습은 최근 이란의 공격으로 미군 사상자가 발생한 이후 미국이 보복성 군사작전을 확대하는 가운데 이뤄졌다.
지난 17일에는 요르단 내 미군 기지가 공격받아 미군 3명이 숨지거나 실종됐다.
휴전 이후 미군 사망자가 발생한 것은 처음이자, 이란의 직접 공격으로 미군이 사망한 첫 사례였다.
