In pictures: Scenes from the state funeral for Iran's assassinated supreme leader Ali Khamenei in Tehran

ONP Summary

Iran's former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei underwent funeral ceremonies beginning in early July, four months following his death in a joint military operation by the United States and Israel. The week-long ceremonial observances drew mourners across Iran and Iraq, while the nation's new supreme leader remained absent citing serious security threats.

Progressive: Progressive-leaning outlets highlight the historical significance and massive scale of the funeral, referencing the 10 million mourners at Iran's first Supreme Leader funeral in 1989.

Moderate: Centrist-leaning outlets focus on logistical details, security arrangements, and timeline, noting Tehran's fortification and the four-month delay before the ceremony.

Conservative: Conservative-leaning outlets emphasize security threats and the new Supreme Leader's absence, framing the event within concerns about leadership succession instability and external threats.

Mourners and leaders from around the world, including Pakistan, gathered at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla to pay tribute to Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated in a US-Israeli strike on Iran in February 2026.

The funeral ceremonies will pass through a series of locations — from the seat of power in Tehran to the holy cities of Qom, Karbala, Najaf and finally Mashhad — reflecting the religious, political and ideological pillars of the Islamic republic.

His funeral, initially delayed at the height of the Middle East war, is taking place as Iran and the US observe a fragile ceasefire following the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding to halt the conflict.
