US Senate advances bill for new sanctions on Russia

The United States Senate has taken a step forward toward approving a new package of sanctions on Russia and Iran, in an effort to increase economic pressure on Moscow.

According to Bloomberg reports, US senators have reached an agreement on a bill that gives President Donald Trump the authority to impose high tariffs on Russian goods.

Under the proposal, the US administration would be able to impose tariffs of up to 500 percent on imports from Russia.

Additionally, additional tariffs of 100 percent are foreseen against countries that continue to purchase Russian oil, gas or other energy resources.

According to sources cited by Bloomberg, the Senate could approve the bill as early as this week. However, its entry into force is expected to be delayed due to the House recess and is not expected to happen before September.

The new measures aim to limit the income Russia earns from energy exports and hit countries that continue trade relations with Moscow despite Western sanctions.
