Fontainebleau forest fires: blazes south of Paris 'contained' but not extinguished, prefect says

ONP Summary
A large wildfire has swept through the Fontainebleau forest south of Paris, destroying more than 1,300 hectares of historic woodland. Emergency services deployed water-bombing aircraft and hundreds of firefighters; authorities evacuated roughly 900 residents. Authorities arrested two suspects in what appeared to be a deliberate arson case. The blaze is part of France's record-breaking 2026 fire season, with over 32,0
Progressive: Systemic capacity crisis — Record fire numbers in 2026 and union warnings of inadequate firefighting resources reveal structural failures in emergency preparedness.
Moderate: Exceptional emergency — An unprecedented wildfire responded to with exceptional measures including water-bomber deployment and large-scale evacuations demonstrates effective crisis management.
Conservative: Deliberate arson — Two arrests combined with suspiciously close fire sources point to criminal intentionality rather than natural or accidental causes.
Two fires that have burned just over 2,000 hectares since Sunday in the Fontainebleau Forest south of Paris, have been "contained", even though they are not extinguished, the local prefect said Tuesday evening.
"Contained means they are confined within their perimeter," explained Prefect Pierre Ory, noting that firefighters will still need to remain on the scene for days, if not weeks.
