India rolls out digital e-OCI Cards

The Government of India will issue only digital Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) Cards to all new applicants from today, July 8 2026, according to an announcement by the Bureau of Immigration. Existing physical OCI booklets will remain valid, but cardholders will no longer be required to carry them.Current OCI cardholders can download their digital e-OCI Card on their mobile phones and present it along with their passport at Immigration Check Posts and to participating airlines whenever required.Also Read: EU aviation agency tells operators to avoid Iran, Iraq airspace until August 31"You no longer need to carry your physical OCI booklet everywhere. Simply download your digital e-OCI Card to your mobile phone and present it, along with your passport, at Immigration Check Posts and to participating airlines," the BOI said in a post on X.
Digital OCI Cards to replace physical issuanceUnder the new system, all fresh OCI applicants will receive only a digital e-OCI Card, marking the end of physical booklet issuance for new registrations.Existing OCI cardholders, however, can continue using their physical booklets if they wish, even though carrying them is no longer mandatory. New applicants must download their e-OCI Card, as no physical document will be issued.Online process, fewer renewal requirements The move is part of a broader overhaul of the OCI system aimed at making the process fully digital. New applications, status updates and other OCI-related services can now be accessed through the official OCI Services portal. Applicants will be required to visit an Indian Mission, Post or Foreigner Regional Registration Office (FRRO) only where a personal interview is mandated.Also Read: Saudi Arabia launches Package Visa, aimed at integrating visa applications into curated travel bookingsUnder the revised rules, personal interviews will be compulsory only for applicants seeking OCI registration on the basis of marriage under Section 7A(1)(d) of the Citizenship Act, 1955."There will be a mandatory verification step of personal interview of all OCI applicants who apply for registration as an OCI Cardholder under section 7A(1)(d) of The Citizenship Act, 1955 (i.e. spouse basis).This personal interview shall be conducted by the Indian Mission/ Post/ FRRO concerned at the time of document verification stage itself and the OCI application on spouse basis shall be acknowledged on the online system only after the personal interview has been held. In other cases, there will be no personal interview," the guidelines said.The government has also simplified compliance requirements for existing OCI cardholders.They will no longer need to renew their OCI cards after obtaining a new passport at the age of 20 or 50, or after updating personal details such as name, nationality or gender. Instead, these details can be updated online without renewing the card.Renewal of OCI Card is no longer required!
