Juvenile crocodile rescued in Sham Shui Po

An animal welfare group said they rescued an injured juvenile crocodile on Wednesday after the reptile was found in a residential building in Sham Shui Po.

Police were alerted at around 12.30pm that a 1.5-metre long reptile was found on the balcony of a building on Tai Po Road, and contacted the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

Writing on social media, the SPCA said the crocodile was found hiding beneath items when its staff arrived at the scene.

Inspectors successfully secured the animal with a snare pole and a long net.

“The crocodile is relatively small, measuring just over one metre in length, and is believed to be a juvenile hybrid of a Siamese crocodile and a saltwater crocodile,” the post read.

As the reptile was suspected to have a leg injury, the SPCA has transferred it to its Tsing Yi Centre for further examination and care.

The crocodile has undergone an initial examination and an X-ray assessment, the group said, adding that it is waiting to hand it over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
