Statement by Palazzo Chigi on the former Ilva steel plant in Taranto

The President of the Council of Ministers, Giorgia Meloni, convened an urgent meeting at Palazzo Chigi today following the Milan Court of Appeal’s order to suspend production in the ‘hot area’ of the former Ilva steel plant in Taranto, which will effectively result in its closure within 90 days.

These facilities are crucial for the plant’s production capacity and are where the majority of Acciaierie d'Italia employees work.

This ruling comes just as an agreement to transfer the entire industrial complex to a major steel producer was close to being formalised.

The meeting was attended by Minister of Labour and Social Policies Marina Calderone, Minister for European Affairs, the NRRP and Cohesion Policy Tommaso Foti, Minister of Economy and Finance Giancarlo Giorgetti, Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin and Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso as well as by Undersecretaries of State to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers Alfredo Mantovano and Giovanbattista Fazzolari.

The Government has taken note of the Milan Court of Appeal’s ruling, which comes on the eve of the discussions to be held with trade union organisations tomorrow and which are now even more necessary in light of said decision.

Despite the latest developments, this afternoon’s Council of Ministers meeting will confirm the allocation of a further instalment of the loan needed to ensure the company’s business continuity, pending the completion of the transfer of the plant’s ‘cold area’.
