'Huanggang to boast strong public transport network'

Transport minister Mable Chan on Wednesday said a convenient public transport network at the new Huanggang port would encourage travellers to use private cars less frequently.

In a written reply to the Legislative Council, Chan said a public transport interchange would be set up at the Hong Kong Port Area of the redeveloped port for local and cross-boundary transport services.

These will include seven franchised bus routes, six minibus routes, cross-boundary coach routes and taxi services, she said.

There will be no public car park at the redeveloped port due to space constraints.

Chan expected more travellers to opt for public transport, lowering the demand for private car parking facilities.

The secretary for transport and logistics added that under a co-location arrangement, shuttle buses travelling between a Lok Ma Chau public transport interchange and Huanggang checkpoint, also known as Yellow Bus, would no longer be required.

Chan said the Transport Department was processing the Yellow Bus operator’s application to transform its service.

“This will enable the operator to make optimal use of its fleet resources and continue to provide other non-franchised bus services upon the cessation of the Yellow Bus service operation,” she said.
