Chief Inspector Steve Edwards retires after 51 years of service
After 51 years in policing, Chief Inspector Steve Edwards retires, leaving a lasting legacy through the officers he trained, mentored and inspired.
For more than 50 years, Chief Inspector Steve Edwards has helped protect the public.
But his contribution to policing extends beyond his own operational service; he has developed generations of officers whose leadership and decisions have shaped major policing operations across the UK.
As he retires from the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC), Steve leaves behind a career defined by public service, specialist expertise and a commitment to helping others succeed. Steve’s policing journey began in 1972 as a cadet before he joined West Midlands Police as a constable in 1975, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, who also served as a police officer.
Over the next three decades, he built a distinguished career across neighbourhood policing, specialist patrols, public order and operational training.
Along the way, he became one of the country’s most experienced public order trainers, helping to develop the knowledge, confidence and leadership of officers who would go on to command major policing operations.
His expertise played a key role in developing public order capability, including the introduction of new shield tactics that were later deployed operationally during public disorder in Edinburgh in 2005.
For Steve, however, the greatest satisfaction came from seeing others succeed.
Having trained many senior public order commanders, he was regularly asked to support major operations as a Tactical Adviser, often working alongside officers whose careers he had helped shape.
It was a mark of the trust and respect he had earned across policing.
Steve joined the CNC in 2006, originally applying to become a Shift Inspector at Sellafield as he approached retirement from West Midlands Police.
Instead, his depth of operational training experience saw him become a Force Firearms Officer, bringing decades of specialist policing knowledge to a force responsible for protecting some of the UK’s most critical national infrastructure.
By the time he retires in, Steve will have completed 20 years’ service with the CNC, bringing his total policing career to 51 years.
During his time with the CNC, Steve played a significant role in strengthening specialist capability and supporting the organisation’s growing contribution to UK policing.
One of the highlights of his CNC career was serving as Chief Inspector within the Strategic Escort Group, leading a dedicated specialist team with an international operational remit.
He also witnessed significant change within both policing and the CNC.
Having joined West Midlands Police in the mid-1970s, Steve described policing then as “truly life on Mars”.
Since joining the CNC, he has seen the force evolve into a nationally recognised specialist police service, strengthening its relationships with Home Office forces and playing an increasingly important role in mutual aid deployments through the Strategic Armed Policing Reserve.
Despite a career that has included commanding officers during the fatal Handsworth riots, training public order commanders and supporting major national operations, Steve finds it difficult to identify a single proudest moment.
“There have been many things I’ve been proud of,” he said.
Among those moments was Steve’s role in organising the CNC mobilisation to support the policing operation for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. More than 200 CNC officers were deployed to support colleagues from the Metropolitan Police Service, Thames Valley Police and Essex Police during one of the largest policing operations in UK history.
Some of his proudest moments, however, came away from major operations. One was presiding over his daughter’s attestation ceremony before later presenting her with her Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.
Continuing a family tradition of policing service, Steve also found himself taking part in one of her training exercises, playing the role of an armed suspect.
After her shield team successfully brought him under control, he joked that she still made sure he remembered the experience.
Reflecting on the qualities officers need today, Steve believes professionalism remains central to effective policing.
“With confidence in policing at a low point, officers have to be knowledgeable to face the tests of constantly being under scrutiny, patient but decisive,” he said.
As he prepares for retirement, Steve says the thing he will miss most is simple. “The people.”
After more than five decades in policing, Steve leaves behind a lasting legacy built on the officers he trained, mentored and inspired, as well as the operations he supported.
His knowledge, professionalism and commitment to developing others will continue through the many colleagues who carry those values forward.
Chief Inspector Edwards retires with the thanks of colleagues across the CNC and best wishes for a long, healthy and well-earned retirement.
