Emirates ID key for UAE return

The Economic Times (India)

UAE residents travelling overseas should ensure they carry their original Emirates ID before returning, as airlines at international airports may refuse boarding if they cannot produce the physical card.

Travel experts say digital copies, screenshots or photocopies may not be accepted, making the Emirates ID one of the most important documents for residents flying back to the country. The requirement applies to UAE residents returning from any country, including India and Canada, after the Emirates ID replaced the residence visa sticker in passports as the primary proof of residency.

Airline staff and immigration authorities may ask passengers to present the original card before allowing them to board flights to the UAE.According to a Gulf News report, some travellers have been denied boarding despite presenting their residence visa or digital Emirates ID through the UAE Pass app. Also Read: Indian mango festival inaugurated in SingaporeThe issue becomes particularly relevant during the summer holiday season, when thousands of UAE-based expatriates travel abroad to visit family.

Forgetting the physical Emirates ID could result in missed flights, additional travel expenses and delays in returning to work. The requirement has been in place since 2022, when the UAE's Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) replaced residence visa stickers in passports with the Emirates ID as the official proof of residency.

Issued by the ICP, it contains the holder's photograph, personal details, nationality and a unique identification number.

The card is mandatory for all UAE citizens and expatriate residents and serves as the primary identity and residency document across the country. Also Read: Engaged with US to minimise difficulties: MEA on new US visa rulesThe card is required for a range of day-to-day and official transactions, including opening bank accounts, obtaining or renewing a driving licence, accessing government services, paying utility bills and completing visa-related procedures.

For expatriates, the card's validity is generally linked to the duration of their residence visa and is typically renewed every two or three years. The Emirates ID system was introduced in 2006 and has since become a mandatory document for millions of residents.

UAE regulations also prohibit employers, companies or other organisations from withholding another person's Emirates ID.Advance renewal for UAE citizensSeparately, the ICP has allowed UAE citizens to renew their Emirates ID up to one year before its expiry, doubling the advance renewal window from the earlier six months as part of efforts to improve service efficiency and provide greater flexibility.Under the revised rules, Emirates ID cards remain valid for five years for citizens aged 20 and below, and 10 years for those aged 21 and above. ...
