US, China top diplomats lay groundwork for September summit

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Wednesday that he discussed Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned September trip to Washington with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in Manila, saying the talks were intended to “lay the groundwork for a very positive visit.” U.S. President Donald Trump, who agreed with Xi in Beijing in May to stabilize bilateral relations, has invited the Chinese president to visit the White House on Sept. 24.
