The Sandinista co-president has had very few friends throughout his political life, and things ended badly with almost all of them. Those he met in Somoza’s prisons, those who fought alongside him in the revolution, those who helped him consolidate power through the courts or the military—they all fell one by one. Some were murdered, others imprisoned, and still others went into exile or were ostracized. Not even his own brother, Humberto, was spared.
