SPBD Tonga surpasses TOP $300 Million in loans, empowering women entrepreneurs

July 9, 2026 – SPBD Microfinance (Tonga) Ltd, part of the South Pacific's leading microfinance network dedicated to empowering women microentrepreneurs, is proud to announce a landmark achievement in its mission to transform lives and strengthen communities. The organization has now disbursed more than TOP $300 million in loans since commencing operations in Tonga in 2009.

This remarkable milestone comes just one year after SPBD Tonga celebrated surpassing TOP $250 million in total loan disbursements in March 2025, underscoring the organization's continued growth and the increasing demand for inclusive financial services across the Kingdom.

For more than 17 years, SPBD Tonga has been a trusted partner for women entrepreneurs, providing access to financial services that create lasting opportunities for families and communities. To date, the organization has supported more than 6,000 women microentrepreneurs, enabling them to start and expand businesses, improve their homes, and invest in their children's education—from primary school through university—creating brighter futures for generations to come.

Beyond providing access to finance, SPBD Tonga has played a vital role in promoting economic independence, generating employment, and reducing poverty by equipping women with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to build sustainable livelihoods.

SPBD Tonga currently employs 47 staff and operates through four offices located in Tongatapu, ʻEua, Haʻapai, and Vavaʻu, ensuring that women across the Kingdom have access to quality financial and business development services.

The organization's success is built on a comprehensive approach that extends beyond lending. Alongside a range of financial products, SPBD provides business skills development, financial literacy education, ongoing mentoring, and continuous encouragement to help members achieve long-term financial success and resilience.
