PNP eyes facial recognition technology, Asean ties to capture fugitives

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) said it aims to capture fugitives more quickly through facial recognition technology and cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Chiefs of Police (Aseanapol). In a statement on Monday, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. noted that the 44th Aseanapol conference held last week endorsed the modernization of the group’s electronic database. “The long-term program (Aseanapol electronic database modernization) includes the wider use of facial recognition technology and stronger forensic cooperation to improve the identification of fugitives and suspects moving across borders,” Nartatez explained.
