Pakistan opposes externally imposed solutions for Syria

WASHINGTON: Pakistan has called for a Syrian-led and Syrian-owned transitional justice process in the Arab nation, stressing that respect for national sovereignty was essential for bringing lasting peace and stability to Syria.

Speaking at an Arria-Formula Meeting in the UN on Transitional Justice and Missing Persons in Syria on Tuesday evening, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said efforts to address the consequences of years of conflict must remain under Syrian ownership, with international support serving only a complementary role.

“National ownership, reconciliation and inclusive institutions are essential for achieving lasting peace and stability in Syria,” he said.

The Pakistani envoy welcomed steps taken by the Syrian government, including the establishment of the National Commission for Transitional Justice and the National Commission for Missing Persons, as well as the preparation of a draft law on transitional justice.

“Effective cooperation between Syrian national institutions and relevant international mechanisms should complement nationally led efforts while fully respecting Syria’s sovereignty and national ownership,” he stated.

Elaborating on Pakistan’s position, Ambassador Ahmad said transitional justice was necessary not only to address past grievances but also to rebuild Syrian society after years of conflict.

“Transitional justice is vital to promoting reconciliation, restoring trust, strengthening social cohesion, and addressing the legitimate expectations of victims and their families,” he said.

Pakistan’s intervention comes as the international community continues discussions over Syria’s political transition, accountability for past abuses, the fate of missing persons and the country’s reconstruction.

Islamabad’s message at the UN was that sustainable peace in Syria cannot be achieved through externally imposed arrangements, but requires a process led by Syrians themselves, supported by the international community in a manner that respects Syria’s sovereignty.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s support for Syria, Ambassador Ahmad said the international community should assist the Syrian government and people in advancing peace, stability, reconciliation and reconstruction.

“Pakistan would continue to stand with Syria in its pursuit of a peaceful and prosperous future,” he said.
