Flights to be disrupted with Typhoon Noul approaching

Airport officials have confirmed that flights will be disrupted from Saturday night until noon on Sunday as Typhoon Noul continues its approach towards Hong Kong.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Steven Yiu, the airport authority’s acting chief executive officer, said both the authority and airlines are actively coordinating their response.

The airport has already activated its flight re-scheduling system, and Yiu advised passengers with travel plans to check their flight status with their airline before heading to the airport.

Additional contingency measures are in the works, he added.

"Most airlines are still in meetings, but I believe they will start notifying affected passengers this afternoon, so there’s no need for anyone to worry," Yiu said.

"We’ll hold another press conference at the airport tomorrow morning, where we will provide more specific details on the number of affected flights and the expected time slots."

Noting that the SAR hasn’t seen a typhoon in some time, Yiu said the authority wanted to give the public as much advance notice as possible.

"I hope everyone will keep a close eye on flight updates," he said.

The Observatory has announced it will issue the Strong Wind Signal No 3 at 1.20 pm.
