Tuen Mun south extension on track for 2030 completion

RTHK News (Hong Kong)

The MTR Corporation said work on the Tuen Mun south extension is progressing steadily, with project leaders confirming on Friday that the new railway link remains firmly on track to be completed by 2030.

During a project briefing, the railway company detailed the intricate engineering and traffic management strategies required to build new stations within the heart of Tuen Mun's dense and well-established residential neighbourhoods.

Alan Yan, head of project delivery for New Territories South, noted that construction is now ramping up at full speed, with the project poised to fully transition into the structural construction phase later this year.

He said the team has largely completed the diversion of underground utilities and the bulk of the station foundation works.

However, Yan acknowledged that the team has had to navigate three significant geographical hurdles.

"We have limited space to work on the ground, and that is why we designed a viaduct superstructure as a station," he said.

He went on to highlight the congested maze of underground utilities – belonging to more than 10 public and private companies – that required meticulous sequencing of foundation work to free up space for the build.

"The third challenge is this is a major road in Tuen Mun South, so we need to carry out a series of traffic diversions," Yan added.

The project will extend the Tuen Ma Line southward by approximately 2.4 kilometres via a newly built viaduct.

The route will feature two new stops: an intermediate station at Area 16 and a new terminal station situated near the Tuen Mun Ferry Terminal.

Construction on the extension first broke ground in 2023.

Once operational, the railway giant expects peak-hour travel times from the southern terminus to the main Tuen Mun station to be drastically cut, giving residents in the southern district seamless, direct connectivity to the rest of the city.
